Speculation - Players From The Relegated Trio

Whilst not saying you can’t get good players from relegated sides (Yiadom), they’re relegated for a reason and more often than not it’s because the players aren’t good enough. I’d quite like it if shipped a bit higher.

We are likely to be shopping in the bargain basement this summer, so if there are players worth having at a cost we can afford then we should go for them.

Bolton
Mark Beevers- also another cb option very strong old school no messing cb. Out of contract too, I believe

Rotherham
Ajayi. Has been on fantastic form between him and Vaulks almost single handedly trying to keep them up. Another cb who could do a job. Bit of a rough diamond though.
Vaulks
Almost the pick of the bunch. DCM and utility back line player. Whoever gets him is getting a player with a big future ahead of him.

Yep, Beevers, 29, is out of contract.

Ajayi, 25, has one year left on his.
Vaulks, 25, also has one year left (after surprisingly signing one year extension just a few weeks back).
I'd be ok with both players, we may have a need at CB and DM, and they both have goals in them.

Pog was a free who scored 24 league goals for the club making him something like our 8th highest championship scorer. Its not his fault we paid him so much.

Why is everyone so extreme? I'm not talking about big money signings, just "a bit higher", premier league relegated players, top 6 squad players, just anyone better than oxf*rd Ipswich.

I believe Rotherham had the option of a 1 year extension on Vaulks which they triggered. Don’t think Vaulks actually signed a ‘new’ contract as such

TBF the chance of us signing top 6 players or recently relegated players are just as extreme.

Reading could easily have been relegated but for last minute goals at Ipswich and v Wigan.

Other Champ clubs would fancy Moore, Swift, Rhino, Mannone, Yiadom, Meite, McNulty, Barrow and any of our loanee, plus Bod, Kelly, Gunter, Jaakola, Blacket, Richards, GMac, Baldock....

About £2m each I think. But some of that may have been dependent on us staying up, which we didn't do.

I know there are many who don't like Gunts - but in terms of transfer cost per game played it's pretty low. And we made a profit on Mapps when we sold him on. Neither were record signings though.

Whether a player is an expensive failure isn't just about transfer fees of course. You'd think overall cost compared to return would be a better marker. Like Pog for instance - undeniably expensive, regardless of whether we had to pay a fee for him. I wonder how much Drenthe was on - now he definitely was a flop!
