Arsenal looking at Vickers and Bindon

by Stranded » 19 Sep 2023 13:46

Arsenal apparently sending scouts down to Exeter tonight in the hope/expectation that either or both of them play as their impressive starts to professional life has not gone unnoticed.

Cue lots of bedwetting over on Twitter despite the fact that this is exactly what we want - find/develop young talent that we can sell on to clubs higher up the food chain.

Pretty much a nothing story though as there will be scouts watching players pretty much constantly.

Bindon was announced as 2 years - with Vickers, contract length was not made clear when he signed.

Firstly, people are reading too much into this. I would expect PL teams to be scouting this competition and it is a game between 2 teams with a track record of youth development.

Secondly, selling on the likes of Vickers and Binden is exactly what we should be doing. Just make sure we have contracts that protect their value and help us get a good fee.

Not sure what options we have at the moment financially but we should be reviewing the contracts of Abbey, Binden, Ehibhatiomhan and Vickers as top priority

If they’re willing to pay an amount that suits us then great. You have to be prepared to sell to be financially solvent in the lower leagues.

Selles has recently said we are at the top of the budget the EFL have allowed us this year - so unless new contracts don't form part of that, I would guess that new deals won't be put to players until next summer - or at least pay rises won't be able to kick in until next summer.

If we ever sort ourselves out from the chaos, finally being able to maximise fees will give me great satisfaction as a fan. Losing one of the 4 mentioned above for peanuts / nothing because of constraints would be a real gut punch.

Other thing to consider is that Arsenal U21s are also in our group, so would probably be pretty standard for them to send scouts anyway.

Yep though whether it’s as absolutely true as that - id be suprised if we signed Wellens and Ryan for example if it meant we then stopped ourselves offering Vickers an extension

At this stage of their career, not sure either would swap first team football for playing at a level they could already play at with our U21s

Arsenal could always purchase and do a loan back agreement, that's pretty popular in deals involving young players these days isn't it? We're not exactly in the greatest position to lose 2 players, especially ones that are certainly members of the matchday squad.

I guess it someone came in and offered at least £2.5m up front for either of them, it would be hard to turn down.

Not sure why anyone would be interested in Bindon - had quite possibly the worst first half ever recorded in Saturday's first half.

They didn’t record any games with the TMc/Holmes combo then?

True. The entire squad is a horror show in fairness

Definitely wouldn't be playing Bindon. Vickers probably.

If I was Selles I'd be very tempted to deliberately not play them now. Approach the scout and tell them Holmes is available and playing.

If Arsenal order £25m for the pair of them then maybe we should accept.

That would be fine... give it another 5 / 6 games min first, but then 'hi, we want you to be part of our first team and grow your ability moving up the leagues with us. Sign this extension with commitment to pay rises please, you know you'll get football here.'
