Rumour - Reece Smith

by morganb » 19 Mar 2025 12:41

Reading FC are keen on raiding fellow Berkshire side Maidenhead United for 22 year old winger/attacking midfielder Reece Smith on a free transfer this summer:

The 22-year-old, who mainly operates from the left wing but also features in a central attacking midfield role, has been one of the Magpies' shining lights this season, registering six goals and five assists in all competitions

I've seen him play a few times this season. Whilst he's one of the two or three that stand out for the Magpies, they are (regrettably) a poor team, and I'm not sure he'd make the step up.

Low risk, potentially high reward I suppose.

I’ve seen him a few times. He’s a class player at that level and he really stands out in a poor Maidenhead side. He’s had a quiet season this year owing to injury and the opposition targeting him. He can play at a higher level than NL and may flourish better in a less direct style of play.

Watched their game today against Rochdale 1-1 and Reece Smith is clearly one of their better players and played wide left and always looked to take on his player and to be honest most times he beat the defender only to let himself down by a poor pass or cross.
Saying all that both Maidenhead and Rochdale were pretty poor and the standard for football is clearly way below Readings standard. There was a decent crowd of around 2300 for the game.

If the player came on a free i would have no problem taking a punt on him, literally low risk and with our training facilities and coaching staff you never know.

I think I'd rather have a player with raw skill and decent decision making than skill and no decision making.

But it would be low risk, and we won't exist for it to happen anyway.

He'll rip up the Combined Counties League that's for sure.
