Not sure that’s quite how it works, or Swift would still be with us and not signed at WBA

Anyone being released is pretty much free to find another club

I mean he hasn't officially signed until the 1st July, people are free to negotiate and announce signings, but they won't actually be completed until after the contract is finished with ourselves.

In our case, I wouldn't expect us to announce many signings before players are released, but if we do then it's not a bad thing.

No reason a player can’t sign a contract now.
What clubs can’t do is register the player until their registration with their existing club has lapsed.

Yes I know, I was saying I am not expecting us to sign players before their contract expires.

You do an incredible job of covering all the possible bases !
It’s very hard to not respond to what you actually say rather than what you eventually decide you think you might have meant to say !

What I did say originally was that most free agents aren't available until 1st July and I wouldn't expect us to do announce free agent signings until after they have been released by their current clubs officially, as I anticipate most of our signings until then will be loan signings or outgoings. I furthered it by saying that if we do announce some free agents, then it isn't a bad thing.

Not sure what the fuss is about as it wasn't what I "decided" to say, rather than what was said.

Well I read it as we wouldn’t announce anyone before July 1st because they’d still be under contract with their old clubs even if they weren’t staying on there

Which isn’t really the case as discussed

There’s a chance we won’t sign anyone til around that date as players will be hoping for better options, but really the July 1st date itself is irrelevant other than the official date the player would become ours (ie swift probably still officially is at Reading even though we all know he’s now a wba player for next year)

According to the above link, Cardiff midfielder Joe Ralls still hasn't signed a contract so is currently going to be a free agent at the end of the month. As he's a fairly local lad (played for Aldershot, Farnborough and Rushmoor Saints, family still in and around the area) I wonder if he'd consider Reading? Can't see many clubs clamouring for his signature.

The article also mentions Cardiff's interest in Josh Laurent as a replacement for Ralls.

Always thought he was a decent player at this level, wouldn't be too disappointed if he switched with Laurent even though they are different players, I still think we'd get similar quality from both. We would just need to make sure his wages are affordable for us.

Just scanning through that article, there are quite a few names on that list I'd consider us signing if we could afford their wages. Smithies, Ralls, Vaulks and Flint would all be good additions to our squad. Vaulks and Flint especially for a long throw that we haven't had since Antonio as a different option and Smithies for a reliable goalkeeper between the sticks.

I believe Flint is going to Derby or Stoke. I’d certainly be happy with Vaulks. I really rated him when he was at Rotherham a few years back.

I have to say that you’re a prolific poster on here. Not a criticism as most of the content is very measured.

I don't mind them and we have some powerful players in our squad, add Flint in with Vaulks and it could be a real asset to us this season if we managed to pull something like that off. Not that I expect to keep Joao but, having the likes of Joao, Meite, Flint, possibly another CB in the box at one time is an aerial threat for every side in this league and just gives us potentially another method of scoring goals. If it earned us even 5 goals a season, I'd take that every day of the week in our current situation.

It has been mentioned extensively. Show some commitment and go trawling.

Id be happy with Charlie Austin, form a partnership with Azeez.

They need to get Azeez sorted, that kid is going to be some talent. Never got excited about one player since Antonio.

If the scenario was, Joao out for £3-5m and Austin and Gray in on free transfers, I'd genuinely be quite happy with that. Not forgetting that Puscas may be likely to leave and if the 2.5m Euro's to Pisa deal is to be confirmed at any stage, we would essentially be saying Joao + Puscas + £5-7m for Austin and Gray for nothing. Would be very smart business from the club if that was to be the case.

If it's anything less on the incoming side i.e. it's one of Gray or Austin, rather than both, then that obviously changes my stance. A lot of time yet though, the window isn't even open.

I'd be gutted with anything less than £10mill for Joao. Very good champ goalscorer has got to be worth at least that much even with a year left.

I can’t disagree but realistically we’d be lucky to get £5m.

Clubs know the situation we’re in and can lowball us knowing that we’ll have to accept eventually.

£5m to £7m seems fairly realistic to me.

Anything less than £4m and its a 'please don't call again'

He's only got a year on his contract. We'd be extremely lucky to get more than £5m for him.
