The best bit about that link was the picture of Ulrikka Jonsson I inadertently clicked on by mistake.

If Saints are so desperate for cash, surely they would like a sale this month, not a loan?

If Surman doesn't come in, any chance of Kris Commons?

The Sun suggests this morning it's a straight battle between us and Wolves we're offering £1.5m plus Pearce. Wolves a straight £2m.

Interesting.

I wonder if they've got anything to back this up or if they've just lifted the idea of the Pearce swap from here?

why we even bothering to go for him IF he reportedly turned us down cos of his wage demands!!!? does hammond think a credit crunch will help reduce his demands....

Was that why the deal fell through then?

We might've changed our mind on what he's worth to us (wages wise) for a number reasons.

1) Hunt is going to be off so we need a replacement
2) Hunt is off so we have room on our wage bill for him
3) He's impressed a lot over the last few months for us to feel he's worth the extra cash
4) We look well set for promotion and so the finances will look better in 6 months time than if we'd struggled
5) If we go up we're going to need better players and that means paying more money

It might not reduce his wage demands but it will reduce the ability of 95% of clubs being willing to meet them. The credit crunch will already have seen clubs significantly cut their 3 year business plans in terms of revenues which in turn requires costs to be cut in line. It might not apply to the Man Citys of this world but the football industry will be in the process of cutting it's cloth according to modern day reality.
The January window will be very interesting in that respect. Many clubs will be trying to offload high earners but buying clubs won't be willing to match existing contractual terms. An interesting dilemna for players also. For example, if you were on £10k per week with 6 months left on your contract would you accept £7k a week for a new 3 year contract ? £350k a year guarenteed for 3 years or take your chances that things might improve by the summer ? I know what I'd do in that situation.

Instead of thinking of it in terms of £s, think of it in terms of carrots.

From SSN -

However, Surman is happy with the Championship strugglers and is not looking to leave Southampton this month.

"I still expect to be here at the end of January," Surman told the club's official website.

"I've got no plans to leave and as far as I'm concerned I'm still a Southampton player and hopefully that will continue.

is Surman another Joey Beauchamp who loves his mums' cooking too much to want to move clubs and improve himself as a player??

No, he is just making the right noises to keep everyone happy in case a move doesn't materialise.
