Need to fashion some sort of a trap to keep him out. Some short blades of grass should do it.

Just to clarify we are talking about the same player, and before i say this I know he hasnt been at his best for many years and is as injury prone as anybody.

But:

1 goal in 3.2 for Manchester United (Not bad considering his knee has fallen off every year)
Former European Player Of The Year
Englands best natural goalscorer since maybe Linekar, and easily the best english striker of his generation.

He would be massive joe gamble but for one season....to see Michael Owen in a Reading Shirt would be a dream come true maybe not for him but for many many many Reading fans!

I see your point but I much prefer young and promising to experienced and declining. We have had success with Ian Harte but we also had Keown and Ferdinand well after their best and with a squad limit of 25 I would even rather we continued developing young Simon Church myself.

E-P and Platy, thanks very much. I've just spent the last two pages laughing heartily.

E-P definitely my favourite poster ever.

Much as I think it would be a bad move, the thought of an ex-Man Utd and ex-Real Madrid player in the real hoops  8)

It would help shift shirts - maybe it is just a marketing ploy.
Not many letters in "Owen" though.

Pretty sure it is same price whatever name and number you choose these days, so would actually make them more money with a short name like Owen as they would be using less letters than signing a longer name...

Indeed - it was a joke, including the length of the name.

I'm aware it was a joke, hence the "..." at the end of my reply. Sounded though that your joke was then saying a longer name would make more money than Owen which it would under the old 75p/£1 a letter days, and I just felt like pointing out the opposite. I haven't read the rest of the thread but I'm assuming it is ALL a joke - Michael Owen to Reading?

Please don't speak for many many many Reading fans. Owen is a mercenary prick who peaked at 22. He's utter, utter gash now and would command a massive wage to turn up and not give a shit for the duration of his stay.

Cares more about his horses these days than football and it shows.

We were told at the time he was only 2 weeks away from fitness and he didn't play for the rest of the season. Took a fit Roberts instead

HOWEVER, if the club can get him on a pay as you play deal I cannot see anything wrong with this. Send Church on loan and ALF can learn from him

If you think he peaked at 22 you must have been in a coma for when he was 23,24,and 25!

I couldnt care less about his other commitments. He WILL score goals. Done it his whole career.

You must have the IQ of about 3 if you think Hunt or Church are better goalscorers, he will do a job for one season!

id personally rather have defoe sign for us on loan with a view for permanent. defoe we could get a few seasons out of, owen we could not. why waste a spot in the squad if he will never play?

Point out where I said Hunt and Church are better goalscorers? Owen was brilliant to start with aye, but that was YEARS ago. Signing players based on past reputations when they've been sitting on a bench for 3 years not giving a toss isn't an intelligent transfer strategy.

Owen's been finished for years, Liverpool recognised that when they sold him off to Real Madrid. He was all to happy to sit on the bench on a massive wage before going to NUFC to not give a shit on an even bigger wage.

Why would he be motivated at Reading? He's a lazy pillock who thinks the sun shines out of his arse. He gave up on football a long time ago and will be an utterly dreadful signing for anyone fool enough to sign him.
