Low in GR has suggested Boro are talking to him having activated the release clause. Basically a case of up to him now.

Also that Cooper is on his way to millwall, which I fully expect to happen

TBM
Hound Thought it was something like 1 million release clause

To be honest would almost take it so didn't have to read the constant noise on here about whether he is good or not

He has but only to a higher division club

That would be laughable. If he was good enough to attract PL interest we should be after at least 3 times that.

And he isn't

Jonathan Low's equivalent up in Boro suggesting Gunter will snub Boro and sign a new deal with us.

Wonder if that has anything to do with Stam signing?

Totally unsurprising. It's typical of Gunter to fanny about at the halfway line, give up on going forward and then take the cautious path back into his own half.

He and McCleary are best mates and live next door to each other - he won't leave

Yeah thought that'd be the likely outcome

Take one look at the state of middlesboro and decide he has it quite good as it is

I'm guessing he took the train up, took one step outside the station and said "Nope" and got the train back.

Gunts won't leave. I cannot see why he would leave to a club with just as much chance if not less of going up next season.

Don't think it has anything to do with Stam signing a new deal. Stam will have wanted funds to sign a new contract and believe he has had confirmation he has that.

Doubt he wasted his time on a train. Just because he was free to talk to Boro doesn't mean he did. Or ever intended to.

He's not even back from holiday yet and there's a contract, must have been more or less agreed last season. Possibly waited to see if Stam signed. Or what clubs came in for him. Or, most likely of all, was always going to sign, and the speculation was just other clubs hoping he'd be flattered by them expressing an interest.

Most unsurprising contract renewal ever IMO.

Um, no. It's actually pretty surprising...

Sign that deal Mr Gunter. A right back pretty much every other fan would want in their club. Quality player and our new Mr Reading.

Really?? What are you surprised by? That Reading offer another contract to a reliable team-player that Stam (as with all managers before him) clearly respects, and is known already for not chasing money? Or that a player that has already spoken of his liking for stability, has seen his bestie sign a 3 year deal at the same club, and has spent the last season gushing about the amount he is learning from Stam, would consider signing it?

If we had been promoted the contract offer would have been maybe a little more surprising. But not by much actually.

CONFIMRED: Gunter is not going to Boro

by muirinho » 05 Jul 2017 10:08

3 more years.

https://www.readingfc.co.uk/news/2017/j ... m=referral

Quote from Jaap Stam
Chris has been a very important player for this club and was again last season, starting every single league game throughout the course of a long campaign. He has a lot of experience, both with his club and his country, he has great ability, mentally he’s strong and, importantly, you can always count on him! So I’m really pleased that the club have given him this new deal.

Turned down a bigger salary too allegedly

it is understood Gunter snubbed a salary increase at Riverside to remain in Berkshire

I'd have thought the prospect of having to see Garry Monk's smug tw@t of a face every day would make anyone think twice.

If true that he has turned down a salary hike to stay with us, it does the young man great credit in this day and age of money grabbing footballers, etc, etc.

happy with this. Twice he has signed new deals when he could easily have moved on, does him a lot of credit.

To be honest, he won't rip any trees at full back in this league but he is a solid Champ full back.

This season is about keeping our best players and building on it, not having to re-build again.

Pleased with this and I agree with Winchesters sentiments.
