Stranded If there's a clause in his contract (and given when he signed it there most probably is) then there's not a lot we can do if someone matches it. So really not worth worrying about.

Can't argue with that, but the fans will still be spitting blood about this especially if no replacement is signed...and lets face it, time to do this is not exactly on our side.

It has always been the case that the fans who never actually watch the team rejoice in belittling its unfashionable but most effective players.

In those days they were known as "The School of Science", due to the quality and intricacy of their football.
As BR2 says, how things have changed, and if this happens; even more so.

Some who take the viewpoint you suggest have been "supporting the team", not just 'watching' for nearly fifty years. At a great deal of expense and also putting in a great deal of mileage.

It has always been the case that the fans who never actually watch the team rejoice in belittling its unfashionable but most effective players. Stephen Hunt is our best player because he is our most effective player. He will do a great job wherever he goes. He did fall off the pace drastically after January of last season, but he's returned strongly, and I am frankly terrified at the prospect of Convey being our starting winger for the whole season. Even less appealing is the idea of replacing a quick, energetic worker like Hunt with a slow player like Surman. Surman in the middle of the park, fine. On the left wing, no thanks.

andrew1957 At the end of last season I was a bit disappointed with Hunty. I thought he had played brilliantly until he got his new contract and then seemed to ease off in the latter part of the season.
So far this year, however, he has been back to his best and I think we would really miss him if he goes - please stay Hunty!!
