Reading are keeping tabs on Ghanaian international John Mensah after they failed to sign the midfielder in the summer. (The Independent)

But wasn't it a case of Rennes not letting us talk to the player not a case of the player saying no thanks.

I can't see Rennes changing their minds a few months down the line and lowering their price just because we're performing above expectations.

We may be willing to offer more now. Especially seeing as our problem so far has been that we are leaking at least 1 goal in most games.

To be honest I think this is a non starter, he's still on a fairly long contract their and they want to keep him or get way over the odds for him.

I disagree. Reading FC have stated in the past that they will walk away if a club are not prepared to do business, as in the case of Dean Whitehead at Sunderland.

That they appear to be revisiting the Mensah situation suggests they haven't been entirely rebuffed by Rennes.

But they may be willing to lower the price as they're are performing below expectations.

Anyway, it's all junk until Januarry 1st 2007.

We might be bottom of the league by then.

Reading to bid for Rennes defender Mensah
tribalfooball.com - October 01, 2006

Reading will try again for Rennes defender John Mensah in January.
The Premiership new boys had a £3.5million bid turned down for the Rennes centre-back during the summer.

But Steve Coppell had Mensah, 23, watched once more last weekend.

Na not now after the performances of the back four. We've also got cover there now. Mensah missed his chance.

Again, Rennes refused us permission to talk to him, it was not that he did not want to come.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if we go back in for him in January esp if Mate is out for some time.

Do De La Cruz's sub standard apperances thus far feature in your thinking? :P

Not at all, what with DLC and Mensah playing in different positions. Anyway I would say DLC has been fairly solid given his lack of 1st team football. Improvement is needed though for sure.

Actually I agree. I thought he was the best new boy in our cup game, but was severly lacking in yesterday's game...

Rennes are looking like relegation fodder at this, (admittedly early) stage. Perhaps they may be more approachable with the prospect of 2nd tier football rearing its ugly head.

They relied heavily on Frei's goals, now he has gone to Dortmund it's no real surprise to see them struggling

agreed, but by january it might be better to be dealing with a team that hasn't already turned down offers. better chance of getting a deal
