TheSiege So, we're planning for the Championship then!

You really are clueless. We can't expect the club to throw several million at players on big wages and then get relegated, nor are we likely to attract them in the first instance. Loans are a sensible choice, and as BM says, he only tends to look at loans who he has a chance of making perm, so it's a sensible approach.

Vital Reading understands that Brian McDermott is attempting to sign Stoke defender Matthew Upson on loan.

Royals boss McDermott revealed during the week that he wanted to bring in Premier League experience on loan in the upcoming January transfer window, preferably on loan, and we understand that the former England international is one of the players he is considering.

Upson, 33, had a loan stint with the Berkshire side back in 2002, where he impressed many in his three-month loan tenure. I'm sure McDermott would be familiar with Matthew during his time here and could bring that all-needed Premier League experience to our defence.

I'd take Upson... think he'd work well with Pearce or Morrison. Not as sure about Mariappa. If Gorkss started playing properly he'd probably be a decent partner for him too.

specialjon As dull as it sounds but my guess is jenas, upson and shotton. Dull but realistic. Obviously I'd like better players but I'm being a realist.

Lacoste You my m8 speak absolute and utter sense.

Add one more and ship a few out and at the very least, we would destroy the Champ next season.

Your sarcasm confuses me. Not sure what you're saying. I'm guessing who B McD is going to bring in not who I'd bring in. Who do you think he'll bring in?

peterroyal76 To be fair Jenas cannot tackle and for a centre midfielder that could be an issue.

Didn't stop Harper being part of a top quality partnership with Sidwell. Legs and Tabb can't pass to save their lives. If we got Jenas in maybe one could tackle and the Jenas could pass it

Wasn't actually being sarcastic m8. I agreed with your post.

I think we have the base of a reasonable cake, just require some much needed icing. Honestly feel like a couple of signings could really turn things around.

Good signing I agree, but would this not be strengthening a position where arguably we have sufficient players? With the exception of Gorkss recently, I haven't heard TOO many complaints about Morrison, Pearce or Mariappa. With such limited resources (apparently) would a marginal improvement in central defense really be the best use of our cash?

I'd worry about the midfield first, then defence.

I'm with you on this.

Our current midfield not only provide limited cover for our defence but keep giving the ball back to the oppo to have another push at them.

A decent midfield would remove wave after wave of pressure building on the defence which keeps seeing them make mistakes, get dragged out of position etc.

A decent defence would still help of course.....

Kind of my point about the midfield. It's hard to see how good our defence are when the oppo are pretty much allowed to either walk upto the final third with the ball, or wait just at the final third and wait for our strikers, midfielders or goalkeeper to give them the ball.

(the comment about having a decent defence was me being flippant, and it did kind of undermine my actual point. Sorry)
