The obvious answer is that we aren't safe from relegation so to leave significant weaknesses in the squad would be crazy.
Also you can hardly expect to give Clarke a chance to make a difference if he is unable to put obvious problems right.

I would agree that now is not necessarily the time to be making big money signings ( but then the summer might not be either) , but plenty of clubs have shown you can build a very good side without spending huge sums.

I would be disappointed if Clarke hasn't been told that his stated aim to make a couple of signings isn't realistic, but I'm expecting loans or canny signings rather than headline makers. The build for next season starts now.....

Nameless To be fair just the 3 experienced international right backs plus at least one decent youngster does leave us exposed there....

I'm expecting no more than a couple on incoming signings ( maybe 3 if the left back deal is done for nothing)

Central striker and left sided midfielder are the essentials. If we don't get those then money spent elsewhere is wasted.

I assume Ferdinand won't be seen this season, but is on a pay as you play deal.

Although his earnings might be significantly boosted by appearances on the pitch, I very much doubt that they are completely dependent on him playing. I would imagine that he is still on pretty good basic wages.

Royal Rother
Simon's Church Ideally we'll bring in a centre back, a right back, a winger and a couple of strikers

To what end?

We are not getting promoted or relegated this season, so chucking a load of money at an already large squad which the new manager has not had time to properly assess would be madness.

If Murray goes and isn't replaced and if we continue to make do with very little decent cover in defence, then relegation very definitely can not be ruled out at this stage in the season.

Clearly anyone remotely connected with the playing side of a football club at this level will be earning decent money, I 'd wager some of our u21 players earn more than the vast majority of HNA posters.
But I'd be shocked if Ferdinan's wage is not heavily dependent on actually getting out on the pitch. But I'd be guessing as much as the next person as none of us know.

Not convinced that apart from left back defence is a massive issue cover wise. We're ok everywhere else along the back four and certainly striker and left midfieldSee are way higher priority.

This FFP is going to kill us.
I read today that Man City are bidding stupid millions on new players but i thought they had been done under the FFP rules?
Does anyone actually understand this FFP bollocks?

Yes. Don't spend £Xm more than your income in a season. If you do, expect sanctions.

Still waiting for QPR and Leicester's punishment for going tens of millions over acceptable losses last season. I understand the complexities but why implement FFP if there weren't clear/agreed processes in place with the PL for dealing with breaches during a season where a club gets promoted out of the FL's jurisdiction? The whole thing was rushed into place and after only 1 season the acceptable losses have almost doubled. I give it 3 years before it's history. What a shame.

Well Leicester are rock bottom, and QPR are hardly safe, so hopefully you'll see it before next season. Wasn't it Leicester that started the trend of administration to dodge debts and got away free before there were points deductions? It'd be apt if they were the first major club to be punished under FFP.

And QPR are over due a screwing too.

Bizarrely this could mean:

Clubs overspend to get promoted to The Premier League.

Fail FFP

Get relegated

Parachute Payments go straight to the FL

Might this not make clubs go into Administration, effectively losing parachute payments?

FFP is a pointless farce as it doesn't apply the PL clubs - it needs to be enforced across the board or not at all.

Penalties should definitely include points deductions as well as fines so it does hurt clubs effectively.

I read that Pellegrini has denied it because of the Champions League restrictions imposed on them this season. Think Aguero and Dzeko are back this month anyway.

On another note, why do we need another left winger? We've got plenty of options there, HRK (who imo has talent it's just that he hasn't fulfilled it), Blackman, McCleary can do a job there if Mackie is on the right, and if we sign a left-back then it means Obita is an option too.

Obita has looked awful there recently, HRK isn't a winger, playing our best wide player out of position seems a waste and Blackman also isn't really a winger.
Rather than stick someone there just to fill a space I think it would make much more sense to get a proper, left footed winger with a bit of pace and a decent cross.
We'd look a much better team ....

What about this Jobi McAnuff kid? I hear he's doing wonders in league 1.

If Hal Robson Kanu isn't a winger, then what is he? He certainly isn't a striker anyway! And I don't subscribe to the 'playing in the hole off a central striker' notion either where he's concerned.

Similarly to Blackman, he strikes me as wide forward... not quite a winger, not quite a striker and not quite a success.

Might work in a 4-3-3, but our fans don't really have the desire to watch a system that doesn't use traditional wide men, we haven't really had the right midfield or defence for it and it doesn't suit McCleary (or previously McAnuff) who consistently performed better. I don't think Cox is the right centre point for it either.

I miss having a consistent, quality and solid left winger like Jobi.

Someone said FFP does not apply to Premiership clubs.

Eh? How come Man City have been done then?
