Or could it just be a sign of the new owner 'flexing his guns'...Wolves show an interest in McD...RFC allow him to talk to them as we are in a fairly good position atm...McD talks to them and comes away thinking it over..Mr Z asks what they have offered and then offers him new improved terms on what he is currently on...grass isn't always greener on the other side etc...and RFC are in a very very good position right now compared to Wolves...

6 months ago we were a club that couldn't compete when anyone came in for our players and staff...now it seems that we can blow 'lesser' clubs out of the water with what we can offer..Kebe, Roberts & now seemingly McD...and I bet we are doing it whilst still keeping an eye on the budget..

The new owner has money but not 'shed loads' and it now means we can move to the next step on the ladder...attracting 'better' players with more experience...rather than having to gamble on 'big' names or 'unknowns' or just having to get in similar players who may get 'better'...

So if he has just signed a new 3 year contract, what's changed?

Isn't he happy with the 1 year deal he had anymore? Why didn't he use his ever so strong position to negotiate earlier?

It may have something to do with the new owners rather than the 'deal'.
Under Madejski there was a great element of trust and security. They understand each other and approach contracts the same way as Coppell i.e. is more of a technicallity than a reason to do the job.... if he keeps doing well, works within the clubs ethos and structure he has a job.

Yeah that's a plausible scenario. Things have probably changed to an extent, but I still think the biggest changes impacting this are his improved position of strength and what the club is willing/able to offer him.
