Sarah Star Is he really off 'cos I just read this in 'Newbury Today':
Football: Royals claim there is no truth in reports of a £5 million bid for Stephen Hunt from Premiership side Wigan
READING FC are still insisting that no bids have been received for Stephen Hunt after widespread reports that Premiership Wigan have tabled a £5 million offer to tempt the Irishman away from the Madejski Stadium.
The former Brentford midfielder is believed to have a clause in his contract that allows him to speak to any club that is prepared to offer £5 million and the Latics have reportedly tabled that figure.
But that has been denied by Reading manager Steve Coppell, who branded the reports as “speculation” he could do without ahead of his side’s top-of-the-table clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday night.
“We have had no bids received from Wigan or nobody else – it is total speculation,” Coppell insisted at a press conference yesterday (Thursday). “He is a Reading player and that is why he is training with us today.
“To be fair to him, he has made his desires known, but he fully realises that he has a challenge here and he is fully committed to that challenge.
“It is what I said before the transfer window in that I would prefer not to comment on speculation but when the speculation is so blatant and in your face, then you have to respond but it is a waste of air as far as I am concerned.”
Meanwhile, midfielder Kalifa Cisse has signed a new two-and-a-half year deal that ties him to Reading until 2011. The 25-year-old, who has established himself as a regular this season with five goals in 25 games, was contracted to Reading until next summer after signing in 2007, but he has now done enough to earn a new deal.
However, the likes of club skipper Graeme Murty and goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, who is currently being kept out of the team by Adam Federici, are set to be kept waiting for any potential new deals until the end of the season.
“Now we are in a position that until we know where we are, players whose contracts are up for renewal may have to wait until the end of the season.” Coppell added.
