SSN suggesting Boro will be in with a £5m bid this week but that we are holding out for £6m.

One man who dazzled in the Berkshire sunshine was the outstanding James Harper. The former Arsenal trainee marshalls the midfield in the modern way and a smile might even replace the normal Coppell frown if he is still at the club when the transfer window slams shut.

Why are we holding out at all? With Matejovsky injured he should not available for transfer at all.

Because the money will be too good to turn down, and it will 'give someone in the squad the chance to step up'....Well, thats what the club will tell us anyway.

At the moment, Karacan seems so far back in this queue that I can't see him.

I don't see why he hasn't even in the bench. The surprise yesterday was that both Pearce and Kelly were on the bench, as Pearce can also play right back there was no need for Kelly.

presumably giving Kelly some experience early on whilst we're short of full backs. Karacan has been unlucky not to make the bench. I still expect big things from him this season and he must be a banker to start against Luton now that Cisse and Harper have had a couple of games to bed in together.

In fact I'd expect to see Harper and Karacan against Luton to see how they work together in a competitive match in case Karacan needs to step up in the league.

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate admits he is still trying to prise James Harper away from Reading.

The former Arsenal midfielder has started the Championship season with Reading, despite interest from Boro and Bolton over the summer.

Boro have seen the likes of Fabio Rochemback, George Boateng and Lee Cattermole depart this summer and with Julio Arca sidelined - Southgate knows he need midfield reinforcements.

Southgate has already seen a couple of bids turned down by Reading - who are standing firm on their valuation of the player, believed to be around £5million.

Boro's previous bids have been under £4million, but reports now claim they have returned with a final £5million offer.

"We've been back a few times because I know he would be good for us," said Southgate.

After unveiling new signing Justin Hoyte before Saturday's opening day win over Totttenham, Southgate will now hope to seal a deal for Harper before the weekend's trip to Liverpool.

I don't mind him going IF we replace him and get atleast another 1 or 2 more in. I don't want this money to disappear like the rest of our sales!

Although we will never spend the money, Harper going is good news. Great servant n' all that but now the laziest player in the RFC side.
