He wouldn't have been on business re Smith, cos Watford haven't accepted a bid from us yet. Unless he drove to Watford to personally hand the bid in.

Jesus, no really? That's why I said he's most likely looking at the other player Rodgers wants to get in before the deadline.

Royal Lady Well d'uh - Smith is a given obviously.

You can't count to two then? Hammond is "away on business", his line of work suggests he's trying to bring people in or he's scouting, both even. That might just be the two that Rodgers keeps reiterating that he wants in.

In this quote ^ you alluded that Smith was one of the two. Not backtracking are you Jay?

No I'm not. We all know Rodgers wants Smith, it's a given. If Hammond is away on business, then you would suspect he's chasing target number two of the two more Rodgers wants. Are you still with me? I'm repeating myself here.

Deathy, you have to type slowly otherwise RL will not be able to keep up. And using words like repeating is pointless as it has more than 2 syllables.

Platypuss
Royal Rother If it hadn't become so obvious that we needed him we may well have got our man for less, but neither Rodgers nor Madejski could afford NOT to get him in the end and Watford knew that so played harder ball than they might otherwise have done.

Fair play to them.

We win, we get our man. (Presumably.)

They win, they get the big fee.

Everyone's happy.

Except Reading FC supporters of course who will look for the big negative.

And if he goes somewhere else?

I dealt with that question in my next post.

Anyway, Tommy Smith won't go to a club heading for administration and relegation.

Thing is, we have, apparently, been fart-arsing about for the last month or so regards young Thomas. If this approach by the pikeys is true and accurate I think that there is every likelihood that he will go there. We have fannied about so much that it must have raised doubts in his mind just how much the club actually want him - unless BR has been talking to him off the record to keep him in the loop.

Look at it another way. Someone you have worked with before wants you to join up with him again. It seems like a good idea cos you had good times previously but it is taking forever to be sorted out and you start to doubt the commitment. All of a sudden, someone from a bigger and more prominant organisation makes an approach with the prospect of greater rewards. What do you do? Go and see what the bigger company offers! It is a no brainer! I would!

Read the last couple of pages of this thread and you should see why it's less than obvious atm.

Bolton have confirmed Portsmouth have bid for Gavin McCann and Danny Shittu. Can they really afford near £2m on Smith as well?

Our club have got what they exactly wanted...a bidding war it seems.

I just hope we don't flap around and accept next week so having even less time to get a replacement.

(That's if Smithy does actually go)

Don't believe the 'rumours' - this is the same Portsmouth that Paul Hart today said are only in the market for free transfers and loan players due to their financial position.

You don't have a bidding war. You have a bid from us and speculation in the media about other interest. And as you say, Watford need to get their arse in gear and stop playing games. They need a replacement!
