RUMOUR - Matt Tubbs

by tomrfcurz » 07 Jan 2011 09:36

Reading lead a trio of Championship clubs interested in Crawley's free-scoring striker Matthew Tubbs.

The 26-year-old has scored 19 goals in the Conference this season, including five from the penalty spot, that have helped fire the club to second in the division and a Third Round FA Cup tie against Derby this weekend.

Tubbs signed from Salisbury in July for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £70,000, and it will take a considerable offer to secure the striker's signature and disrupt the promotion chasing side's squad.

Crawley have made promotion back to the Football League their main priority and have spent big as they try to achieve their goal, signing Wrexham goalkeeper Scott Shearer during the Christmas break.

Manager Steve Evans has stated that his prolific frontman is good enough to play in the second tier but he will not welcome any bids with the promotion push looking so promising at the half-way point of the season.

Sounds like the sort of money RFC would look at and the sort of standard we would be aiming for. Really wouldn't surprise me to see him and Sercombe join this window. Has anyone seen anything of this lad cos i can't say i have

I work with a guy (Oxford fan) that rates Tubbs as the best player in the Conference, by far. Seem to remember him saying something about Tubbs preferring to play non-league because of work commitments (but might be confusing him with another player).

However good he is it would be a huge step up - especially at the age of 26. A 20 year old might make it but at 26 it is very unlikely.

That's a massive jump. He's 26 and if he doesn't hit the ground running he could well be 28 before we see anything from him, if at all. We don't need another Mooney. Hopefully the lad will be given a chance at a Scunthorpe or a League 1 club, but I'd be dumbfounded if he came here.

You'll need several examples to convince me. Jumps like that don't often happen or work out.

Kitson12 Gary Hooper...

It is to do with age rather than just coming from non-league. This guy is 26, Hooper is 23 later this month and was playing in the Championship with Southend at the age of 18.

People develop at different ages....

Not saying he's guranteed to make the step up, but, if our scouts see something then I don't see a problem in giving him a chance.

And I was merely quoting the name of someone who'd come out of non-league, for roadrunner's benefit.

Maybe someone more relevant might have been more appropriate....

As a fan of the league of gentlemen I'm hoping he signs. If we do sign him, I'll celebrate by buying the 3rd kit and getting his name and number on the back!!! :D
