I’m quite pleased with the signing of Manset who I think can make an immediate impact.

Brett Williams……. could be a Doyle, Mooney, Long or Hartenberger who knows.

But there are a couple of things that bother me about this week’s signings……..

1. No mention of the push to the Premiership by the Madejski or anyone else on the offical website announcing the signing of Manset ?.

2, Two strikers in a week ????? In the January transfer window? this is Reading after all .

McD has said we don’t have to sell and we don’t want too, but has the Mad Man echoed those words?.

My problem is that knowing Madejski he will allow Long to go and these signings are designed to appease the fans ahead of the big letdown.

Watch this space, Madejski has a cunning plan and this is the first part of it.

We do have 5 strikers now(six if you include Mooney). Presumably Mooney will go in the summer along with one of Church,Hunt or Long. If one goes now I think it would be Church but I don't reckon this will happen until the summer.
I can see Brian Howard going next week though.

Howard back to Barnsley or elsewhere no problem ( he will move where his teeth will be treated by the best. Most dentist recommend 6 months away)

Simon Church needs to go on loan and get first team football, if he doesn’t then he's up for first team selection because Long has gone. The conspiracy theory goes on for another 10 days til the 31st of Jan. Watch this space

Maybe, just maybe, the club are finally learning that the fans can't be fobbed off like peasants being thrown some scraps of food and told that it's a feast. I'm most regards, the club play with a straight bat...but the self-marketing side has always bigged itself up that we can take on the world (like Hammond's infamous 'Arsenal' quote.) I'm glad they've mellowed these signings as being 'evolution not revolution'.

As for two strikers, well, it's one and a half...Manset should figure very quickly whereas Williams won't appear until next season at very least. Manset is the type of striker we've not had since Kitson (and even biggers than Kitson.) So, hopefully, now we have someone in...then we can move on someone like Church...or maybe Hunt won't get his contract renewed in the Summer. But, as the OP says, if we sell Long now then it's just another kick in the teeth - like Sigurdsson.

Still, I think Federici is off in the Summer...just a gut feel.

Right now I think Hunt is the better striker, but he still hasn't returned
to his best form. is that because he's lost mobility after his op and
will never again be as good as he was, or is he still getting absolute
match fitness? Also he does seem to be injury prone, and the contract
is nearing its end.

Church is talked about as having loads of potential, and he did OK for
goals last season, still has the best minutes per goal of any of our strikers (bizarrely)

So MAYBE the logic would be to run down Hunt's contract, or is he already negotiating?
If negotiations are ongoing, the club is now stronger and may keep his wages down.

If it were me, I think I'd try to get Church one month somewhere where he starts. Or
could we risk a no-recall allowed until the end of the season with Long-Manset/Hunt and Williams/Bignall as cover? Maybe

Decide on Simon after he's had some regular starts.

Of course, all the above can change due to an injury to any striker. Amazing how all-of a sudden we have

Long-Manset-Hunt-Church-Williams-Bignall-Taylor (and, technically, Mooney)

The actions of the Club so far this window have not indicated that we are desperate to give it a real go this season. After all probably only one of the signings is going to be pushing for a first team place immediately. That doesn't mean of course that we won't give it our all on the field to try and get promotion.

I don't think the signing of two strikers has made it more or less likely that Shane Long would be sold in this window. The signing of Manset has just brought the quota of strikers in the first team squad to four which is not excessive. Had we signed BWP or if Manset had come earlier then the signing of Williams would just have been a footnote and not trumpeted as a marquee signing.

Big bids for any players will be accepted of course and it wouldn't be a surprise to see one go in the next few weeks but I think the Club would be happy to wait for the summer before the big money sales. Think there may be a bit of wheeling and dealing this window still with someone like Howard moving out and a cheaper like for like in.

More speculatively thinking about shock departures even someone like Tabb or Cummings may want to move on to get first team football and I reckon if it is possible to let Zurab go back to Blackburn then we would do that.

Interesting times indeed - 2 strikers in a week when we already have Church & Hunt to support Long. As commented above though, this is Reading...

Realistically no-one will take Hunt/Church due to lack of form and/or games, which leads to the very obvious conclusion that Long is on his way. Will be very surprised if he's here in February - but if he is then a big well done to Madejski who may just be showing a bit of ambition, albiet still on a budget.

Fair play to QPR, can see them definately going up with the signing they have made

Chimbonda, Routledge and Miller > Morrison, Willams and Manset

But they lost one player. Has Chimbonda played much recently?

Maybe, just maybe, he feels that bigging up our Premiership ambitions when signing a 21-year-old from League 2 would be slightly risible?

That and the fact their owners are the 2nd richest men in football might allow them to exceed their 'budgets' slightly...

I thought that.

Wondered if they were still after someone but had a loanee lined up if they failed

Possibly hinting at not expecting much more between now and the end of the transfer window, but maybe another loanee' somewhere in the mix either way

http://www.readingfc.co.uk/page/NewsDet ... 12,00.html

The key line is "The chairman and the board are happy as we've managed to do this within the financial parameters set for the CURRENT SEASON"

Just remember Hammond, the club £4m deficit this season, then siggy went for £7m let alone Marek ,cisse, Rasiak wages etc etc.

Don’t think for one minute you have to still sell in the summer because money……….if he wants to go because of the clubs lack of ambition, different matter.

At least this thread prevented the board dealing with anarchy this window

If Long goes in the summer it will be mostly because he WANTS to move to the Premiership, not because we want to sell him. We can only hold him back for so long before needs to move on to further his career. As a club they have to do the right thing by the player as well as the right thing for the club.
