RUMOUR - Jason Pearce

BARNSLEY will continue to scout the player market despite being thwarted in their attempt to sign Bournemouth defender Jason Pearce.

The Reds had a bid for the central defender rejected but were told he has agreed to join another club, possibly Reading.

Pearce, 25, was a key target for new Reds boss Keith Hill, but unfortunately he hasn’t been able to get his man this time as he looks to add to the early acquisitions of Craig Davies and David Perkins. Reds’ director Don Rowing revealed: “We made a bid for Jason, but we were told that he’d already made a promise to join another club.

Peterborough are reported to have agreed a £500K fee so unlikley to be us unless we have guzumped them.

If we signed him, then convinced the England U21 manager to come out of retirement, if we could find a right back with the same name we would have a back 4 comprised of Pearce, Pearce, Pearce and Pearce.

Every time the opposition scored they would genuinely have "pearced" the defence.

The Peterborough deal floundered when the Bournemouth Chairman discovered, very late in the day, that Pearce had a 50% sell on clause negotiated by his predecessor. Not surprisingly the club is holding out for more than £500K knowing they will only recieve half of the money!

If Pearce is coming to Reading then we will need to be paying around £800k miniumum to get him.If true then we have already accepted a bid for Mills and he is on his way.....

A very good player by all accounts - the heart of the current Bournemouth team and one of the best prospects to emerge from the club in years.

for that sort of money and with losing two centre backs already, we should be in there like a shot. it shouldn't have anything to do with relying on another defender leaving. we need a centre back, go get him. by all accounts a bargain at that sort of price!!

we have three centre backs in morrison, mills and pearce, we've just lost Ivar and Kish, we need another. this pearce is young and highly rated and 800k is cheap as chips, even for us. of course we could try and bring in a fringe premiership defender on loan again and add experience, but that's temporary and costly in itself

At the moment we don't need another as we have Mills, Pearce, Morrison & Harte who can play there with Gunnarsson, and possibly Leigertwood or a youth player as emergency cover. I'd rather have a new left back, assuming Williams is a failure.

If Mills were to go, we'd definitely need a new and hopefully fairly pacey centreback of course.

Could be an option, I have no idea if he is any good or not as I have never seen him play, but a Bournemouth supporting friend of mine said the following;

Very committed player who is robust and good in the air. Excellent tackler and a strong leader on the pitch. Not super quick, but not slow either. Sometimes gets too close to the opposition player so gets spun a bit and his distribution makes Sonko look like Franz Beckenbauer. He could hold his own in the Championship, but would not be a top Championship player. When I mentioned a figure of 800K, he said he would bite our hands off for that. It appears he will be off as Bournemouth have already signed his replacement

With that summary, a fairly solid player at he moment, but it would all depend on how he develops. It needs to be remembered that he is only 23 so young and far from the finished product.

Having said all that, I cannot see Reading going into the season without signing at least 2 new specialist Center Backs (assuming Mills is on his way.) Going into the season with only 2 recognised Center Backs would be make us very vulnerable at the back if we got injuries.

I heard that Tommy Youlden and John Hulme were thinking of coming out of retirement should we find ourselves short of CB's ! :)

I think Sonko's distribution in his first few games for Reading would make this lad Pearce look like Franz Beckenbauer right now.
