SPECULATION - Matthew Upson

by Binfield Royal » 06 Jun 2013 12:29

Has just been announced he will be released by Stoke.

Obviously, he had a very successful loan spell with us in the middle ages but, I wonder if he would be a tailor made replacement for Pearce.

FWIW, Ady described him as the best centre back he played with at Reading.

I would not be unhappy if we signed him.

2nd best loanee in the history of the club, after Maejski loaning the club itself to AZ.

Ex-England international who scored at the World Cup, so will probably demand too high a wage than we can offer. Will most likely end up at another bottom half PL team.

1 year deal with slightly inflated wages I could see, while we have the parachute payments. Was at loan at Brighton, so looks like he's happy to play at Championship level.

Forget Upson. We are building for the future not signing some old codger whom is injury prone and past it. Real Facts from the Main Mannnnnnn. You know it make sense.

These threads remind me a bit of Championship manager where you offer a contract to every free agent under the sun and end up with too many players .... just because they're free and available.

Would rather see Mariappa and Morrison get the chance to develop in the first team further.

Morrison I think would make a good future captain and if Jobi leaves Mariappa may be a good candidate for the armband.

We need a CB, Upson would be more than good enough.

Once a player has been let go he won''t have a salary. Surely we could make him an offer that is good fror us and see what happens?

He'll probably feel he can still play at the top level - so if he came here he'd not be happy on the bench, and I'd rather have Mapps and Morrison to develop a good partnership.

The best defender I've ever seen play in a Reading shirt, even if it was just temporary.

I'd be well chuffed if we got him on a one year contract

Amazing how the same sort of people who criticised McDermott for making a short term signings like Ian Harte and Jason Roberts are salivating at signing 33 year old Wayne Bridge and the prospect of 34 year old Matt Upson.

I don't reckon Upson would get into the team ahead of Morrison and Marriapa. I'd be more than happy for him to sign to sit on the bench but I'm not so sure he'd be so happy about that idea!

Incidentally, Stoke have also released Pennant, Delap and Sidibe. Don't really know how good they are any more but gotta be worth considering at least.

Not salivating - just "not unhappy"

And, you need to bear in mind that we are unlikely to appeal to the next Ashley Cole or Frank Lampard (or more likely their foreign grown equivilents) unless we are established in the PL and in fairness, Bridge and Upson are the kind of players that could get us there.

Hardly, but to get promoted it is key to bring in some experience and mix it with youth, and both would be good additions to the squad.

Wayne Bridge and Upson or the Wolves CB are a good call for the next year. Question, did Harte and Roberts cover themselves in glory last year? That's why they should have been signed on one-year contracts. Had the been, people might not have objected.
