RUMOUR - Danny Guthrie to Norwich

by Croydon Royal » 16 Jan 2014 14:39

Don't have anything at all that could back this up, but just had an email from a Norwich fan at work who says they've been linked with Guthrie. Doing a very quick Google search brings up this: http://services.pinkun.com/forums/pinku ... wPost.aspx and this: http://www.norwich.vitalfootball.co.uk/ ... p?a=345706

Wouldn't be as gutted with this as I would have been 3 months ago, but still not a player you'd want to see leave. Don't believe a word of it though.

Would we miss him? Obviously he can pass the ball better than anyone in the team, but he slows things down too much and the moment passes us by. Our last two wins have been without him as well. We'd have to replace him, but at least it would be someone of Adkin's choice, and not on the wages Guthrie is on. I'm nonplussed if he goes.

Might not be working too well recently, but's about as key as any player we've got to the way we want to be developing our playing style. Given our horrific injury problems in midfield, the last thing we need is to let Guthrie go, unless we're getting in a very good replacement.

Williams is the only midfielder we have other than Guthrie, who is definitely decent, will definitely be here, and is likely to be fit enough to play the rest of the season.

Akpan's had about 1.3 good games and plenty of terrible appearances. Baird isn't ours beyond Jan and isn't fit at the moment. Karacan's out long-term and after two major long-term injuries you can't rely on him getting back to his previous level. Ledge will probably never play for us again. Then we're down to youth team players. We've got a glut of midfielders, but few of them are both available and actually good.

nonplussed means totally confused. I presume you mean not fussed?

Might actually be a good move for us. We've tried to build a team around him but he clearly doesn't have the ability or personality to lead a team. It could be that we've come to expect too much of him. In any case, it might be best for all concerned if he departed and NA started building his own team round his own choice of players.

Wouldn't miss that well dodgy barnet either!

So we have not renewed Baird and we sell Guthrie. And Karacan and Legs are out long term.

That leaves us with Williams, Akpan and Jake Taylor at CM. That should be enough to terrorise the rest of this division!

Assuming the takeover does not go through and we don't buy anyone then if any of you think selling Guthrie is a realistic option I do wonder about your sanity.

We'd get money for him that we could reinvest like we were forced to do when we sold players like Sigurdsson who was vastly better than Guthrie.

Hughton is desperate and Guthrie is someone he had before and enjoyed moderate success with a combination which, along with Hammond' negotiating skills, would most likely lead to them paying over the odds.

Taylor needs some more chances, but hasn't impressed so far.

Because people don't spend all day reading every single part of every single thread. But of course mods, feel free to delete/merge/do whatever you like with it.

One group on this thread know what playing decent football, particularly at the highest levels, is all about. The other clearly don't!

Some live in the footballing 21st Century, the others live in the dark ages.

As for the successful reinvestment of funds received - was the sale of Sig really an example of that working well?

Well, we did get to the play-off final within 9 months, and won the Championship a year later.
