Who goes ?

by howser » 31 Aug 2014 17:46

With all the talk about a couple or more players coming in by tomorrow night or when the "loan" window re-opens in a few days time. We are all aware that "some in" generally means "some out" ?

For me:

Drenthe------------A complete waste of time, money and effort
Pog------------------ Odd one I know but we are, allegedly paying him rather a lot of bucks each week, maybe the "kebe" injury syndrome again here
Kelly
HRK------------------Don't see either of these two featuring much in NA squads once injuries ease, and with the emergence of the young players

Guthrie-------------Don't want to see him leave, but he has a bit of baggage here, so maybe cash in on him ?

Hal Robson Kanu is the best deliverer of a cross in the club and always rated Kelly above Gunter.

Can't see that anyone will pay Pogrebnyak or Drenthe's wages. As Mcleary and Guthrie are injured, I recon the only out will be youth loans in positions we strengthen.

Drenthe - not going anywhere, who's going to want him?
Pog - not going anywhere, injured and where is he going to get a comparable deal with his record?
Kelly - not going anywhere, who's going to buy an injured player who's barely played for a year?
Guthrie - unlikely to go anywhere, fitness problems and not hugely impressed here, who's going to offer him a comparable deal?
HRK - not going anywhere, who's going to buy an injured player who's never delivered on his promise?

I do not see anyone leaving tomorrow, but I am hoping for 3/4 arrivals.

I can see Akpants going if another CM comes in. Or going on loan when the window opens a week later.

I can't see us taking ANOTHER midfielder except maybe on a loan until Christmas. But you're probably not far wrong about Akpan. Now that he appears to be behind Kuhl in the pecking order, as injuries start coming back he's completely superfluous.

I think the only 3 in the squad who I'd genuinely be upset if they left is Pog, Guthrie and McCleary

Mackie had a slight strain and was expected to be available after a couple of weeks, which he was.

Can't see HRK leaving after getting a contract extension and the number 9 shirt.

Definitely injured. Think we've missed him in recent matches, but at same time think we could do a lot better with a big player who can actually head the ball on much lower wages.

Assuming they are actually injured ...

For people like Drenthe we could sell for a nominal amount and offer to pay half their wages - still cheaper than keeping them on. Be a shame to see Pog go - I like him even if he cant jump and is expensive. Similarly I like Kelly but he does seem to have been out of favour since NA arrived - maybe could help out at left back (yeah yeah I know, although he has played there at international level).

Drenthe was an expensive experiment. Guthrie is a yellow card magnet + we have quite a few CMs now.

Letting Pog go, in my opinion, is one of the biggest mistakes we could make right now. Yes, we got lucky against Middlesbrough but look at the result against Forest without him in the team. I have no doubt that with Pog up front to hold up play and bring other players in we could've got either a goal or two, or stopped it from being quite such a hammering. The big man's been outstanding at the beginning of this season, and he's the only player in the squad who can play in that lone striker role properly.

Also, he played 41 games last season - but I guess you're comparing him with Kebe, who played an average of 37 games a season with us.

DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEElighted to be wrong about Drenthe. Albeit it we're so desperate we're blatantly paying most of his wages still.

Pedant on/

Kebe made 149 league starts and 26 sub apps in 6 seasons, 07/08 to 12/13 inclusive), so 25 starts + 4 subs roughly on average per season.
