by morganb » 22 Aug 2024 10:12

Reading have made an enquiry about signing Everton defender Reece Welch on loan [@SportsPeteO]

The 20-year-old went on loan last season to Forest Green Rovers and racked up 24 appearances for the Rovers.

Well that`s hardly a ringing endorsement is it?

He racked up those appearances in the first half of the season as Everton recalled him in January 2024 so presumably he must have impressed them in those appearances (though why you'd recall a 20 year old who is impressing on loan, unless you were going to play him in some games, is beyond me). For the record he's a 20 year old (21 next month) centre back who has also played for nearly all the England youth levels as well.

Orient also after him apparently.

Unless they planned to loan him to a higher level but it didn't happen for some reason.

Anyway, he is highly rated at Everton but I'm not sure CB is the place we need reinforcements in is it esp a player who his parent club is going to expect to play - unless one of Bindon/Mbengue is off before the deadline Friday week as wouldn't want either of them making way for him.

unless we are considering Dorsett as a permanent first-choice LB now, it only leaves us with Bindon, Dean, and Mbegue, with the inexperianced kids as backup.

Yes, but my point us, Everton would likely want Welch to get a certain number of minutes, so who would he displace. Would be better served bringing in a free agent there - looking at Transfermarkt someone like Dan Potts or Paul Dummett (if either are fit).

Yeah, it's a no from me. We have two excellent CBs and a veritable horde of promising academy players. Blocking them with a PL starlet with no L1 or higher experience is the bad old RFC.

What we need are fullbacks, not young CBs.
