Rumour - Knibbs to Hull in January

by Mid Sussex Royal » 16 Dec 2024 18:32

Being reported by @sportsPeteO on Twitter, who also reported first on Knibbs coming to us from Cambridge.....

Hopefully lazy journalism and James Earnshaw is right re the contractual thing with Hull

Not great, but we could absorb Knibbs going if necessary. Midfield is where we're strongest, and Ehibhatiomhan would fill the wide slot he's currently in when fit.

And he should go for a decent few hundred k.

I don't think Knibbs would find it easy to step up a level in a shit relegation threatened Hull side.

Thought he was prevented from taking Reading players in January.

It’s modern day football

Guess they can ‘body swerve’ any contractural agreements if the £ suits both teams?

……and agree with Ian ( ), a bad move for Harvey

Presumably if the clause exists, Hull can still make an offer to buy it out. But suspect it's just 2+2 as opposed to solid evidence.

Until a bid comes in it is all supposition of course but if a clause does exist would a clause in the players contract supercede that.

So say for example, Knibbs has a clause that says he must be allowed to speak to a side from a higher division if they bid over X - I am assuming that would trump any clause that may have been agreed between us and Hull.

You'd like to think that if any such agreement is in place, it'd be honoured and Hull wouldn't even try to make an approach. Then again, if it's just a handshake or so-called gentlemen's agreement then they can obviously just ignore that and make an offer for Knibbs, who I presume would probably go.

I wouldn't like to lose him at all, and I think he could step up to the Championship, although going to a struggling side with a new manager -albeit one he knows - may not be the best place to showcase his talent.

If Selles is going to come back for any of our players I would think Lewis Wing would be top of his shopping list.

Earnshaw is reporting today that Hull live have confirmed that a clause is active but he also says that we would find it hard to turn down any offers because of our cash slow issues.

Maybe - but I'm not sure either WIng or Knibbs would have much of an impact at a struggling championship side. Both are solid/just above average L1 players and both have regular off days when opposition sides do their homework on us properly as per Saturday.

But the clause with Hull should prevent them bidding over X in the first place?

I don't think we can afford to lose him. His goals, assists and general play are far too important for us. Furthermore there's no guarantee when/if Kelvin will be fit and, even when he is, he is a different style of player who we were hoping would provide us with greater depth elsewhere.

Reality is that we can ill afford to lose any players from our paper thin squad, particularly if EFL sanctions mean we are not allowed to replace them (or Dai simply won't sanction any replacements).

Agreed Wing is a better player.

Any clauses can be waived if the parties agree, which is why it was all a bit odd that such a clause was included anyway. It's utterly meaningless.

Hopefully we can arrange something if we sell players in January in a similar manner to Campbell coming in after Azeez was sold, because our squad is pretty light as it is.

Got to be honest, I currently have no bad blood for Selles, but if he starts picking apart the squad in January and actively participating in our further demise when he knows what a precarious position we're in, he's a bigger judas than McGhee and Pardew combined.

Wing is 29.

He's a very good League One player, he could probably be an ok Championship squad player, worth a contract on a free. But he's not really getting any better, so he's a poor January signing requiring a not insibstantial fee for a Championship club looking to stay up.

Agreed to an extent but if Hull speak off the record to his agent saying, we would love to sign him in January but we know we can't - the player or the agent can simply kick up a fuss about restraint of trade yada, yada, yada.

All the same think that earlier court ruling would mean Knibbs could only give notice he’s going and not just walk out. Just depends if there would be any “notice of termination clause”.

As a collective and under Ruben’s guidance we had a good team that with a few additions could have improved/developed further.

However, if you take those players out of the group, I can’t say they’re Championship quality players. Bindon and a couple of others have great potential, but I’d be surprised if the majority attract that much interest. I get desperate teams at the bottom of the Champ might take a punt, but I don’t see our players making much of a difference to any Champ team.

Yeh, if Selles is chasing Knibbs and Wing, they're not the calibre of players to keep them up. Building a team for L1 promotion.
