RUMOUR - David Bell

by Platypuss » 26 Jun 2008 07:54

From the BBC's rumour roundup:

Luton midfielder David Bell could be on his way to Reading for £400,000 as a replacement for James Harper, who is set to join Middlesbrough for £3.5m. (Daily Mirror)

I quite rate the Mirror's rumours to be honest - they seem to have a better hit rate than the others.

Agreed, it would be so typical - get a player on the cheap, improve him, make a good profit, get another player on the cheap, improve him.....etc...

Looked average a best on loan in a poor Leicester side.

You don't sell someone for £3.5m and take a massive gamble on someone like him.

And yes I know we signed Hunt, but that was a long time ok and we've signed plenty who never had a chance cause they were never good enough. Sodje, Kebe, etc....

From Carrowroad.net

One time Roeder target Luton's David Bell could be in line for a move to relegated Reading, as a replacement for James Harper, who is set to join Middlesbrough for £3.5m.

It was thought that Bell would be one of Roeder's first signings when the news of his interest broke, Coventry withdrew from the race to gain hs signature, supposedly leaving the way open or City. It was thought in some quarters that is was a done deal when Bells name was withdrawn from the squad list on the Luton Town official web site.

Perhaps with the signing of Clingan and the possible capture of Gow the midfield department looks to be covered, but can you have enough cover ? However if Roeder is to continue his interest he now looks to have a battle on his hands.

The webmaster at City till I Die raises a very good point when he asks the question.

If you had the choice would you leave Luton for Norwich or Reading? It’s possible you’ll play a bigger part in the first team in Norfolk, but by the same token I think it’s fair to say you’re more likely to get promoted to the Premier League with Reading - when they would probably replace you.

Something that the player may have to decide, but I do believe our interest has ended, as soon as I say that it will change.

25 years old, played a couple of years in the Championship, fairly cheap he's got a little bit of pedigree but not much. This is a 'Reading' deal, although of course they'll be disappointed about going down (nobody likes failure) I can't help but think there's a couple of guys in the boardroom (inc the Chairman) that are fairly happy about being back in the Football League. We can compete and pick up players like this again.

I think this rumour has some substance, Reading have definitely shown an interest, whether they make an official bid remains to be seen.

Can you feel the ambition? I can't either.

Doesn't it make you want to get off your arse and throw your money at the club? No it doesn't

Would a big signing encourage you? Dam right it would.

I could see him coming in and playing a similar role to Gunnar 3 years ago. He is a good championship player with a bit of pedigree, wont cost the world and could fill in when one of the first choice CM's get injured or suspended.
