Hi all,

I'm currently in the process of moving from Ireland to a new job in Reading, arriving the last week of August and I'm looking to train and play with a football team over there up to a decent standard.

I played League of Ireland Under-20 and A Championship (Irish third tier) for Sligo Rovers as well as playing for non-league representative squads in national competitions from underage up to adult and university teams.

Any further info or even clubs to get into contact with would be greatly appreciated.

You sound more qualified to play football on these shores than Shane Long was when he came over, First of all sign me up as your manager so that I get 20% of your signing on fee and then head down to the Reading FC training ground for a trial.

In all seriousness though, what is the standard like? My understanding is that it's better standard's that play on the Saturday's? I'm going teaching over there so it doesn't make much of a difference but as I say I'd like to play at as a high a level as is possible etc.

Twenty Five years ago....and back in my day etc etc admittedly.....but:

Saturday is the better standard, plenty of well appointed village teams with decent facilities looking for "up and coming" Hellenic League standard players.

Sunday, as a rule, you turn up and kick off with 8 or 9 players....then your hungover mates turn up to make up the numbers.

The Sundays was the better fun tho'

In my 30 odd years of being heavily involved in local football my observation is that on Saturday players tend to play at their true level right from the Prem down to Reading League Div 4. The teams are all well established, you get very few new entrants.
Sunday on the other hand you often find players playing well below their capability some genuinely to play with mates but on the other hand an awful lot of "pot hunters". I can think of loads of teams that went through the ranks up to Sunday Prem and then folded when the going got tough. Most ran/managed by someone with an ego who was happy to shell out a bit of boot money to attract the best players.

My bitterness regarding glory hunters goes back to 1979. One John Murray (44 goals in 131 games) left Reading the season before and became player manager of on of the Wallingfords on Saturday. He used a Div 4 Sunday team (Hamilton Academicals) to test out the young talent as well as playing himself. Our Sunday side was very much comprised of anyone who couldn't get a game in either Sat side plus the hungover twice a weekend mob so Div 4 was our rightful place. When the 15th goal went in after I had brought Murray down for a pen I was less than complimentary about his abuse of the Sunday League system. We lost 17-1 with, iirc, Murray getting about 7 of them.
