DOESN'T IT FEEL GREAT TO BE A READING FAN ?

by Crowthorne Royal » 19 Sep 2006 15:07

1st game, 1976 vs Stockport D4 - Reading win 5-0, Friday scores. Next game Tranmere - Reading win 5-0, Friday scores hat-trick including 'that goal' that people always refer to. If I'm honest I don't remember that goal, I was 9 at the time and I thought the whole game was just wonderful. We have had an awesome start to our Premiership career and it got me thinking about how other teams and indeed rivals have fared since coming in to contact with Reading over the last few years...

Oxford - I watched a little bit of Oxford vs Crawley on SKY last night - How the 'not so mighty' have fallen. From Div 1 in the 80's to The Conference now.
Swindon - League 2
Wycombe - League 2 (have always been there haven't they ?)
Aldershot - Have they ever got in to Div 3 or above ?
Walsall - Fighting it out with us a few years ago - League 2 (Butler 6 for the season!)
Brighton - As above, somewhere in league 1
Brentford - League 1 (and we've stolen most of their players and 'let' them have mad dog in return !! - Sorry Bees..)
Rotherham - League 1 with 1 point after 'administration'
Tranmere - (Play off semi 1995) League 1 ?
Cov - Glamorous Div 1 club who we beat in the semis of The Simod - Languishing in The CCC about third from bottom
And so the list goes on..
Loving every minute, loving the coverage and perhaps most of all the 'critics surprise' at our ability. Nevertheless I am abundandtly aware that the club has self desructed in the past and may do so again. But, in all honesty if we lost to Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal would anyone really be that surprised ? West Ham A will be tough too and we could have 9 points after 10 games soon ! Anyway, just over a point a game is what we need so we'd still be on target !
C'mon URZ !

i've been watching reading since i was about 10 or 11 (17 coming upto 18 now) my first game was reading vs halifax cup game i think it ended 1-1, ever since then i've gone to as many games as possible and i've loved every minute of it, i remember the division 2 playoff final, that was the first full season i supported reading and was probably one of the most heart wrenching things ever to happen to me

My first was a testimonial for Fred May against Arsenal (I think it was 1974) Been a regular at EP and Mad house since

But the best thing now is that during our Div 3 and Div 4 years, I, like most of us, 'adopted' a big team, who we followed week on week.

Reading was my team but my 'big' team is (was) Man U. And I have been to a few (about 10) Man U games but always supported the Royals.

This Saturday it will be with upmost pride that I will wear my hoops (well half a shirt of them) and will be roaring on the Royals and will just love it if the Sunday Headlines are something like 'Rooney sees Red as Man U get Royal Roasting'

This is what being in the top flight is all about and I am just loving it. :D :D :D

My first was Hull, 1st game of the seaon in 1991. McGhee had just taken over..............To think I believe we have finished in the bottom half on 3 or 4 times since - 11 or 12 years where we have been there or there abouts.

That has reminded me of possibly the worst football kit of all time. From my (dimming) memory I recall a game in the early '70's when I'm sure it was Doncaster who turned up in an all purple away kit.

Anyone confirm this for me?

[RTG on]/ sniff, brings a tear to my eye just remembering /[RTG off]

Luton H L0-1 Mar 70, bloody Fred Sharpe wouldn't bring Malcolm MacDonald down as he sped clear to score in the pissing rain! He wouldn't even have picked up a booking in those days!
