Up yours Robert Maxwell!!!

by Rudolph Hucker » 21 Sep 2006 22:32

Twenty three years ago Fatboy Maxwell tried to merge his shabby little football club with my beloved Reading. Overwhelming local support meant that he was eventually defeated and the two clubs retained their individual identities.
This saturday as we host Manchester United in the Premier League Oxford United are visiting Stafford Rangers four divisions lower in the Conference ~ it doesn't get much better than that!
Had Maxwell not been beaten it's unlikely that 'Thames Valley Royals' would have survived with no support, no history and no traditional home.

Thankyou Roger Smee for doing as much to bring about this saturday's prestigious fixture with United as any of the present day hierarchy.

And Robert Maxwell........rot in hell.

Robert Maxwell - a true socialist! Of course, we are now lumbered with more of his ilk in Blair and Brown.

I sincerely hope they go they same way as that fat old cnut.

I think Smee was only after the land. I think all gratitude should be in the direction of Sir John. We would still be playing in league 1 or 2 in a ramshackle Elm Park without him. Sir John Madjeski for President.

Harsh on Smee. He was genuine, although he's definitely not in Sir John's league.

Without Smee, Tranter and Brooks their would be no Reading football club today. Saturday should be for them we owe them a great debt.

Roger Smee may not have had the same vision as Mr Mad but the club certainly owes it's existance to him and colleagues. Without Smee there would have been no club in Reading for any rich benefactor to take forward.

Of course the same could be said of Joseph Sydenham

Were there ever "new" stadium plans drawn up for the Thames Valley Royals? It would be interesting to see how it shapes up to the Mad Stad which was conceived 10yrs later. Does anyone have this??

Maxwell, the consumate 20th century politician!

May he rot in hell for what he did to the pensioners of the many companies he "legally" robbed - never mind what he tried to do to Reading.

Roger Smee and the others saved the club from dying.

Mr Mad nurtured it into life.
