New Stadium Plans Announced
Gull's Chairman, Chris Roberts, confirmed that he is in talks with interested parties to move Torquay United to a brand new stadium at the Recreation Ground on Torquay seafront .He said the transfer would include relocation of Torquay Athletic Rugby Club and Torquay Cricket Club, who are both based at the Recreation Ground. The plans will include a much needed athletics track.
Mr Roberts sai "We're aiming to create a 21st Century facility at the Rec. It's about what's best for the Bay as a whole. We must maximise the site's potential."
Torbay Mayor Nick Bye and members of both clubs have met with Mr Roberts and talks will continue in earnest now that there is a positive response.
Mayor Nick Bye said: "If Mr Roberts comes up with some exciting proposals, then we should listen to them. He seems very enthusiastic about Torquay and Torquay United, but we need to know more detail."
Cllr Gordon Jennings is angry that talks have gone on without consultation with other councillors, and he plans to raise the matter at the next full council meeting, on November 30.
Mr Jennings as leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: "Surely there should be a meeting on these issues. Let's see the plans."
