Graham Stack is NOT AS GOOD as Marcus !

We're in the Premiership. Things are different to last year. Thought people would have realized that by now.

One of the best keepers is at Bolton. And he doen't improve by moving clubs. Let Marcus continue to learn. And lets get MURTS back to strengthen the ship

Couldn't the fact that Marcus is kicking more than throwing this season because he's been told to do this? I'm sure he's not being told to kick it straight out but he probably has been told to direct his kicks to the wings. If this isn't wanted, I'm sure that instructions would come onto the pitch PDQ to tell him not to do this. I'm not sure though why he should be being told this - unless SC has no faith in our defence being able to carry the ball forward.

Spot on. Whats the good of pumping it down the middle for every centre back in the country to get when we haven't a big forward. Unfortunately when the ball is overhit, it goes straight out of play..which is perhaps better than the opposition building in midfield.

Oh to be a Manager.

You lot have poor memories, he may have poor distribution but at least be chucks the ball out, rather than Whitehead who famously chucked it into his own net.

Give the guy a break, he may have areas to improve but he's the best keeper we have had at this club for years.

aardvark I think he's made a few mistakes this season. Is Simon Shephard still available?

TOTALLY AGREE PieEater.

He was on the 6.00 Radio Berkshire Royals phone in tonight. Not sounding as bold as usual so he needs the crowd to give him confidence after facing the best Premiership strikers recently.

I'm gathering you dont go to any games then? Maybe steve coppell has taught him to kick it more i dont know, but for goodness sake if you have players left and right of you roll it out, all the best sides play from the back, we dont want to lose possesion every time.

Whoever said about the Bolton keeper getting better over time referring it to Marcus is Laughable. For one Jussi is a lot younger than Hahnemann and has been playing in the prem for a good few years now. Hahnemann has hardly got age on his side anymore has he. I just feel along with many people on here that we really do need to look at bringing in a new goalie. People have different views on Marcus...fair enough, but we have the worst defence in the prem and i would vouch marcus as much responsible as the defenders

Coppell's Right Footed 11 After a brief chat with my brother he feels Hahnemann is an excellent goalkeeper however i feel strongly against and feel he is pretty terrible.

Im going to have a look at his pros:

Good Shotstopper
Strong Physically and wins most crosses
Good rappor with the fans
Fantastic Championship Goalie

Against:

Kicking is awful, kicks it out of play half the time
Distribution again is woeful, and this goes in with awareness. why he continues to kick it instead of rolling it out like every other keeper and resulting in losing possesion baffles me each week.
With better players in the prem i feel he is much more clumsy due to the different shots being used compared to the championship and he spills more than a baby on its napkin. I.e Kuyts goal on sat, and Yakubu on opening day.
Last criticism is his positioning. I feel he really is the a close second behind harper on the headless chicken syndrome. I.e Hulse And Downings goals against us.

Hahnemann is a good championship goalie and did wonders for us last season, but i just feel that hes not quite the premiership standard but this is my opinion..

Views??

If Marcus's kicking is so bad, God knows where that leaves most other Reading keepers down the years, and that includes Shaka.

Keeping my views polite, perhaps you are yet another fan who should spend less time worrying about who is singing what to whom or, who is standing and who is not, and take a close look at what is happening on the pitch. Then, you might see a little more of what goes on when Marcus kicks the ball and sometimes goes out of play.

Put it this way, whatever his faults, there are many keepers who would love to have Hahnemans ability to throw to the halfway line and kick to the opposing penalty area with ease.

Im sure they would love his attribute on kicking, but it doesnt mean Hahnemann has to do it all the time does he?...no! hahnemann has thrown the ball out once to the halfway line and that was when we were 4-0 down at home to Arsenal.

Again everyones entitled to their own opinion but im saying that if we want to move forward then we need a new goalkeeper IMO. He is the best goalkeeper we have had as we are in the premiership and he was a big part in getting us there and if you read my posts i havent questioned him at championship level or what he bought to the side. Premiership however i dont feel hes quite good enough.

Hahnemann has thrown out to the halfway line on countless occasions since he came here and if he doesn't do it as much as much as many of us would like, it can only because he is acting according to instructions given to him.

As I've said before, it seems obvious to me that many kicks are placed down the flanks to give our vertically challenged strikers some chance of winnng the ball against an Ashley Cole rather than a John Terry (or at least force one of the centre halves out wide thus making some space)

Anyone who thinks Marcus regularly aims down the centre and kicks into touch is showing the powers of observation one has come to expect from the South East corner.

I think it's too early to say.

Our defence is now under far more pressure but he's making no more errors than anyone else (and nothing as elementary as Ingimarsson's for Liverpools first on Saturday :? )

Just like Nicky Shorey, Marcus needs serious competition for his place and he's yet to get it from Graham Stack.

I think Leeds is probably make or break for our No2 and we will look to sign someone capable of putting Marcus under pressure if it's felt that Stack is still not good enough.

It's too easy for Hahnemann because he's got no pressure on him from Stack. He's a good player (Stack) but he's not very positionally. Hahnemann needs to have someone to put pressure on him like others need pressure on themselves otherwise they'll keep on making mistakes and will never be changed.

Agree - he probably knows that he has no real competition from anyone - especially now we have loaned Stack out.

Hahnemanns kicking is sometimes very poor. Right out of play occasionally.

Some of these posts are now starting to indicate that Marcus isn't keeping up to the task because there is no real competition for his position.

Having seen him and listened to him for a number of years now, I can't accept this.

He's still not proven at premiership level I know, but has anyone any suggestions as to realistic competiotion from a Championship or other league keeper. I sometimes still watch some of the League football on Sunday morning and some of the HOWLERS are laughable.

We're behind you, Marcus.

We cannot afford two Premier quality keepers tho, so we have to make the man in the shirt realise how important it is that he ALWAYS plays to the top of his game.

Hahnemann has been an excellent servant for us and has played brilliantly for us while with us.

But keep a bit of realism, the quality of striker's is different compared to the Championship, the pace of the game is changed, everyone that saw the Middlesborough match would have been shocked by the opening 30 minutes. We now use a lighter football in the Premiership that can move around so much in the air.

The only issue is he's now 34 and hasn't got long to run on his deal. I'm not 100% convinced he'll get offered a new contract but as others have said, our budget simply doesn't allow for 2 Premiership class goalie's.

As for looking for an alternative, I wouldn't mind taking a Mr Ashdown back to Reading now that he's 3rd choice at Portsmouth behind David James and Dean Kiely.
