OldBiscuit Not just losing 'Our Robin' but seeing him go to a club going nowhere (then or since), and for the insulting sum of just £30,000.

Surely 30K wasn't quite such a small sum of money back in those days. Also, I believe Charlie Hurley had realised the writing was on the wall, even he was struggling to have any control of RF's excesses, and that the very bright star was soon to burn out. He therefore decided to move him on and get what he could whilst the player was still worth something. If so, his judgement was proved right.

At the time I was still very disappointed to see Robin Friday leave though.

I always used to hear a story at the time that the Cardiff manager rang Hurley a few weeks after the transfersaying that he felt sorry for robbing Reading blind and that Friday was the greatest bargain of all time, a few months later he rang back saying no one had seen Friday for weeks and did Hurley have any idea were he could be, Hurley just laughed and said I told you so..

One player had a profound effect on me when he left. Gilkesy was my first "favourite" and was gutted when he left, and to Wolves as well to join the FSB...

For me it has to be the polish international, the greatest player i have ever seen wear the royals shirt.

Forster - although it was right that he was finally allowed to move on. For 3 to 4 seasons he was the best player at the club at his peak.

On the flip side, most delighted when Caskey was eventually shipped out.

The players who I was disappointed to see leave us would be:

Jamie Ashdown, Curo, Adie Williams, Linvoy Primus, Darren Caskey, Grant Brebner and Shaka Hislop.

A long list, but all players I was gutted to see leave us.

Only one Trevor Morley Michael gilkes

I still cant believe we flogged him on transfer deadline day to Wolves for 100,000 - it was the beginning of the end for that team.....

One of the best bits of business ever done at Reading.

Yep. When I saw him tear Derby apart at the start of the season I thought that he was the one missing piece in the jigsaw and that all of a sudden we had a complete and balanced team.

Simon Osborn went to QPR... unless you mean a different player called "Osbourne"! Although I think he went to Wolves after QPR...

I've never forgiven Neil Webb leaving us for Portsmouth they were in the same league as us at the time.

Why's everyone saying Scott Murray? Apart from a very impressive opening half few games, he did little afterwards when SC came in and wasn't 100% settled in Reading and we took the right decision.

I was gutted to see Owusu leave because although he wasn't the greatest player who'll grace the hoops, he gave everything for the cause and was a top bloke if you ever spoke to him.

Possible reason for leaving, from an old Webb article.

He loved Portsmouth. They won promotion to the Second Division in his first season and he was soon a crowd favourite. “We were playing in front of 20,000 people — to me it was an absolute dream. I had a great time, a great house, some great friends around me, a tremendous life.â€
