Phone-in, Fri 1 Dec: BACK TO '95

by Ollie » 27 Nov 2006 17:18

As Reading prepare to host Bolton Wanderers at the Madejski Stadium this weekend, BBC Radio Berkshire brings you a back to '95 special.

We've raided the archives to look back on the famous meeting between the two clubs in the 1995 Division 1 play off final at Wembley.

Former Reading player/manager Mick Gooding is our special guest and we want your memories too.

So not just questions this week (still more than welcome, leave them here as per usual), but your memories of that game. Cheers all!

I've spent the day watching Joel mess around trying to find the '95 commentary on old reels of tape, so it should be worth a listen.

Wasn't Steve Beddow doing the commentary then?

Mick, did you ever used to have anything with your rice pudding or did you always have it neat?

Also what biscuits did Jimmy Quinn have in his tin and did he ever share them out?

Have you ever experienced people getting your name wrong on official letters e.g. Mick Godding, Ricky Gooding - how irritating do you find that?

Why couldn't we hang onto a 2 goal lead with 14 minutes left to play?

Red or blue bounties

How difficult was it to get players in that season, did you feel that perhaps JM wasn't quite as willing to allow new faces into the club in case we did go up?

Why on earth did we get Michael Meaker as part exchange for Simon Osborn, couldn't we have had more cash?

I cant even bring myself to think about that fateful day. Sat high up at Wembley for the second visit of the mighty Reading to Wembley, Martin Salter close in front of me, no chance of us making it to the Premier League, but wait.... whats that ? a penalty and we are already 2-0 up, nothing can really go wrong now!!!!!!!!!!!

What you really need to do then is ditch your user name and take up some other identity so as you never have to think about it again.

Player for player pick your best XII from the current squad and the Play off final squad.

zac naloen The only time i've ever cried at a football match.
I can feel my eyes well up slightly just at the memory.

What cost us the game, Shaka picking up the back pass, Archie missing the penalty, Gilkes getting cramp or just a lack of fit players?

How do you think the 95 side would have done in the Premiership had the playoff final gone the other way?

Did you really just pat Archie on the head and say "never mind" or did you all get him in the showers afterwards with wet towels?

How long did it take to truly get over the defeat?

Do you still have a desire to headbutt Jason McAteer and John McGinley the same as I do?

Did you feel bitter or drink a glass of celebratory bitter when Reading FC made it to the Premiership?

These days do you prefer a savoury rice over an ordinary rice pudding?

How many of the players actually cried at the end of that match? I have never seen so many grown men crying around me as on that fateful day.

Did you get overly excited when we went two nil up and say to any of the players, as I did to the grown men around me, we're going to be playing Man Utd next season?!
