Huntley & Palmer OK, the mass consensus of opinion is that no-one particularly minds Coppell playing a scratch reserve side through any round of the FA Cup. Unless we get to the latter stages and have secured Premiership safety.

What would you feel about Reading rejecting an application to enter the Intertoto Cup based on the same viewpoint. It starts in June, offers no financial incentive in the early stages, puts extra strain on an already small squad. Would you stand by Coppell's decision to not enter it if elligible? Would you not want the opportunity to watch Reading in Europe?

I don't know whether he'd say no, no-one can answer for him.

I guess he could say that European experience would 'be invaluble to the team, you can't put a price on that...' and so on.

On the other hand, he could say 'it's too soon for the players that we have, we're too thin and need to bulk up our squad before we even begin to think about a European campaign...'

The thing is that some fans seem to be so short-term and can't see the wood for the trees.

Coppell has always done things with the club's best interest at heart.
No ego, no gamble, maintaining the priority.

I'm sure he feels that we can augment the squad, improve, gain experience and attack success on a lot of fronts.

But he feels that the best chance of success this year is attaining the best possible League position for Reading, without distraction and I agree.

If you ignore the top four and look at the next six clubs, that includes us as having a shot at it and we have avoided a relatively tough draw against minnows or another Prem club.

I'm not sure why the Top 4 is being ignored when the last 10? 11? seasons have seen one of those clubs win the thing. The next six clubs are usually out early, from memory. I get the feeling its why they make it higher in the league.

But then again, a cup run would add something to the club. We've made the semis once, and surely no-one alive remembers that, and then that's it.

It is a weighing up of pros and cons, what do we stand to gain, what do we stand to lose. I think the argument that "they might get injured" is a bit of a nonsense one as "they might get injured" absolutely anywhere. What I would like to see is the side getting strengthened, where possible, as/if we progress. Ultimately, it is Coppell's decision. As a customer, well, I don't have to pay for it. That's the only protest power we have on the matter.

As for the InterToto cup - its one two-legged game in June, to qualify for the qualifying of the group stage of the UEFA Cup. As its by application, I simply cannot see us applying and Newcastle will take their place in it.

Huntley & Palmer
You don't think that we will get nine points from our next eight games? I presume by the same token we will therefore be relegated or stay up on the middle of April.

Did you miss the disasterous New year - end of season run of 2005?

How much money is it per place in the premiership

are we better off money wise finishing 10th in the prem or 14th in the prem and getting to the semi finals of the FA Cup?

Huntley & Palmer With regards to money, if you get to the quarter finals then you are well on your way to over £1.5 million if you total up the money from the FA, TV and radio coverage and gate receipts. I had not realised that a club like Reading could turn it's nose up at that amount now

Perhaps you should help and dish out 20 notes tomorrow then?

Nope, I was there thanks very much. The poor run at the end of January was detrimental to our promotion hopes but did not kill them off. Losing our last three games did, I remember watching the win against Sunderland in the pub and really thinking we had a shot of the playoffs again. The complacency of that season and the poor squad quality have been eradicated as far as I am concerned. Our next eight games are against teams around us, I believe we will have over 40 points by the end of February

I remember watching the Wigan game up at Wigan and feeling that I'd have worked harder than Brooker.

Personally, I would be petrified if we ended up in Europe at the end of this season; we simply don't have a big enough squad to compete at the moment.

The recent past is littered with teams that, in some ways, surprisingly got into Europe, only to then struggle in that season; Ipswich, Millwall, Everton and of course West ham all come to mind.

As for the FA Cup, is anybody surprised by what Coppell has said? Its no different to last season where he played the reserves against both West Brom and Birmingham, and no different to Warnock telling Shef Utd fans not to bother coming to our place in an early round of the Carling Cup cos he played his reserves.

The fact is that we have 16 games left in the League; if we went into the FA Cup thinking we are safe, then lost say Doyle and Shorey to serious injuries against a team of lower league cloggers (which Burnley were last season at least) and got sucked into the relegation battle, how many people would come on here and moan about it???

Coppell only has whats best for the club in his thoughts, and it seems to me that he has done pretty well for us so far.

As a PS: I'm sure all Liverpool fans are still wallowing in their Champions League triumph of a couple of seasons ago; how did THEY get on in the FA Cup that season???

I have no problems with SC playing the kids, we have to find out sooner or later if they're good enough and it's a challenge for themselves to prove they are good enough.

My guess at the 11 tomorrow is as follows;

Federici

De La Cruz
Golbourne
Sodje
Bikey

Oster
Convey
Halls?
Gunnarson

Long
Kitson

Seems like a good and strong enough team to beat them.

OK, maybe it's time to re-vamp the FA Cup.

Here's what I would do.

1. Get rid of the League Cup.

2. Keep the FA Cup 3rd round as is in January

Now for the revolutionary bit...

No more cup games until after the league season.
The league season continues to an earlier finish - say 2nd week of April - with no Cup games to interrupt. Once the leagues are over, the FA Cup is played as a knock-out Festival of football.
5 rounds to be played over 3 to 4 weeks culminating in a Wembley Final.
I think this competition would be taken very seriously and it would bring the crowds back. Any Prem side in the 3rd round would be desperate to get into the end of season competition. They could then concentrate entirely on the League. The play-off's might get in the way a bit, but I'm sure something could be arranged.
You could even make the competition every other year to increase the cache further, and reduce player burn-out.

---
Obviously FA Cup weeks are used to rest players, particularly for clubs that are knocked out ! so there could be 1 rest week added to the league season if it was felt it was required.

People are saying we shouldn't take risks, but want us to start with Convey and/or Kitson? :|

In regards to the people who disagree with Coppell's view on the FA Cup, there will be nothing like a poor turn-out to show him how much of a turn-off it is to the regular fan.

Could even change his mind.

Doubt it though.

It would be a small crowd tomorrow even if we played a full strength side.

Obviously, but I have a feeling quite a few people are annoyed with this and will not go.

Not annoyed, just piss-poor value for money.
