I don't think that a football pitch can be expected to drain at the rate the rain was coming down on saturday. The groundsman apparently said that the pitch would be playable in an hour if the rain stopped - I think that indicates that the drainage is pretty good. It also suggets that the pitch should be ok for tomorrow unless we get another extended spell of very heavy rain on Tuesday afternoon/evening?

As I said in the original post; at the Madstad you are relying totally on the subsurface drainage systems as water cannot be easily shed sideways off the surface. Many grounds have the front rows of the stands below pitch level to assist with the drainage paths.

Only asking as previous clubs have before such as Charlton when there game with Newcastle was called off half hour before kick off.

Think Burnley should otherwise people who drove down won't want to do it all over again when we only played them a season ago.

Club To Lay On Cheap Travel To Reading

BURNLEY Football Club and Fraser Eagle Coaching have joined forces to offer supporters subsidised travel to tomorrow's FA Cup third round tie at Reading.

The club sympathises with supporters who made the long journey to Berkshire on Saturday, only to see the game postponed 10 minutes before scheduled kick off due to a waterlogged pitch.

And as a gesture of goodwill, the club and Fraser Eagle Coaching, the Official Travel Partner of Burnley Football Club, are delighted to offer an unlimited number of supporters the chance to make the journey on Tuesday afternoon for just £10.

People are thick and have short memories about the half price season tickets which of course I know were not on sale this season. They were a stepping stone for 'newbies' to be able to purchase a season ticket for this season to see Premiership football. THis matter was debated on here in great length some time ago and I don't intend going there again!

I think you are the one with the short memory! Half season tickets existed when the Championship, let alone the Premiership, was still a dream in many people's eyes. My (then young) daughter benefited from one in the season we lost in the playoff at Cardiff. It was her introduction to the club proper and she has been a very loyal Royal ever since. Shame the club didn't feel able to offer a better concession rate for the Burnley game. Had they done so, she and we would have been there.

Has anyone mentioned that the areas of the pitch that had the most standing water on were the areas that get the most wear & tear from the rugger buggers. The waterlogged strip by the East Stand is a worn patch where they hold the scrums & where the players stand for line outs.

Kick them out now. I dont think the club get very much out of them anyway. I know Richmond paid £250k a season, thats f all to a prem side.

You really must get out more. I have already said that I agree with the postponement. I also agree that it is a rarity - that doesn't escape the fact that the pitch is above the water table and should be well drained.

It might be well above the water table, but it's not on otherwise "normal" ground, sothe drainage properties may be quite different.

It's on in-filled ground land where the contaminated dump used to be, and I think the pitch is built over some kind of plastic "bubble." Can't for the life of me understand how that could be, but that's what I remember from when it was built.

Many grounds have the front rows of the stands below pitch level to assist with the drainage paths.

I think some Reading fans int he front rows at Upton Park earlier in the season experienced this design at first hand!
