Alan Partridge Interesting that people are saying they are worried about Federici displacing Marcus if he got injured Can I ask why? On that performance he's got to be a serious contender for the shirt, Marcus has been one of the weaker links for me this season, no where near his best yet we'd be worried if AF was needed? Not me.
That was arguably the best goalkeeping performance from a Reading keeper this season.

I've not been too impressed with Marcus this season but, when I last checked, he was fifth in the Actim list of Premiership goalkeepers.

Woodcote Royal It's a tough balancing act for managers trying to give inexperienced players a chance whilst maintaining enough cover to cope with injuries.
IMHO, no position highlights the dilemma more than goalkeeper and few managers make a better fist of it than Steve Coppell.
Woodcote Royal He needed to know if Federici was up to the task if Marcus gets injured and, whilst I tend to agree with some of the reservations above, I still believe the answer he got was, yes.
Woodcote Royal Of course, there are always risks attached to not bringing in more experienced cover but, unlike lesser managers (Pardew, for instance) Coppell realises that risks have to be taken if players are to progress and why not take those risks whilst protecting the star performers that you know you would struggle to replace?
Stack, it would appear, has gone because he wasn't good enough and if Federici's performance wasn't good enough to make his manager reconsider any imminent purchase of a new 'keeper, there's no point in him being here, either.

Hoop Blah Totally agree on the difficulty of the taks, although I'm not sure Coppell has handled the keeper position any better than Pardew did. We've been blessed that Marcus has been a pretty consistent and injury free keeper, who was one of, if not the best keeper in the division last season.Woodcote Royal He needed to know if Federici was up to the task if Marcus gets injured and, whilst I tend to agree with some of the reservations above, I still believe the answer he got was, yes.
Obvioulsy the management see a lot more the keepers than we do, more so than any other position, and they have some faith in Federici, but it's only first team games that you can really make a sound judgement on. After one appearance Federici has quited himself pretty well. He did the so called easy bit for keepers, pulling off some very good saves, but also made a couple of costly errors and didn't look the most commanding.
In an ideal world I think we'd have three senior keepers, two more experienced (Marcus and another challenger for the shirt) whilst our less inexperience keeper (Federici in the current squad) goes out on loan to a lower league side to prove himself capable of replace one of the more senior keepers.
Without the experience of playing first team football it's a gamble throwing any keeper into our side, and on the back of just one performance we can't, as fans (and probably the management team too), make a judgement on how good they really are. I remember Simon Shepperd having a good game at Leicester, that certainly wasn't a fair reflection on his general performance!Woodcote Royal Of course, there are always risks attached to not bringing in more experienced cover but, unlike lesser managers (Pardew, for instance) Coppell realises that risks have to be taken if players are to progress and why not take those risks whilst protecting the star performers that you know you would struggle to replace?

As for Stack, I think he proved decent competition for Marcus without ever really doing enough to stake a claim as his eventual successor. He's an average Championship keeper at best, and as such your right, he was proven not to be good enough for where we now are.
I don't think Federici would be a suitable replacement for Marcus YET, but with more first team football the management will get a better feel for his ability, and Tuesdays performance will have been a positive for him I'm sure. A loan move where he actually gets games would be a major benefit to him and the club but it seems thats easier said than done.
For those that are proclaiming him as a major challenge for Marcus' shirt and a future number 1, they should remember the hype surrounding Young a couple of years ago and look where he is now.

Harold Didn't Federici get lobbed for the first Burnley goal, then got caught out by a cross for the 2nd?
Good debut.

Woodcote Royal I can't believe that you feel Stack was decent competition for Marcus while at the same time not being happy about Federici being his replacement.
I remain convinced that Hahnemann lost no sleep whatsoever from Stack breathing down his neck but no 'keeper who saw some of Federici's saves on Tuesday could have said for sure that they would have stopped those same strikes 9 times out 10.
My point is that Pardew, and most other managers, in my view, would still want to relegate Federici to No3 for the reasons that you state whereas Coppell will be giving serious thought to making him our permanent No2.
This is because the man who unearthed Wright, Bright, Doyle and almost certainly, Shane Long, knows that, not only would Federici not have played on Tuesday with an experienced No2 champing at the bit but that he would almost certainly go the same as every other Reading youngster other than Adie Williams for the best part of 2 decades....................very few have made it and even fewer in the Hoops.
That's why he's decided not to send Shane Long out on loan, and, acccording to Nick Hammond, won't be bringing in a striker this month.
So, as I said, whilst there's always risks attached to giving young players a chance, Coppell has proved himself a master at getting it right. Yep, thanks to losing our top striker on the opening day of the season our options have not been all that we would have liked but, we've still scored a very respectable 30 goals in 22 games with Long spending much of his time in the stands.
Whilst I, too, thought he could go out on loan, Coppell clearly wants him to have a chance hear.................................who are we to disagree

Denver Royal Fed had a makeshift back 4 in front of him, true.
But he also wasn't facing strikers in the form of Henry, Drogba, and Rooney...which is what Marcus has been facing.
Suffice to say, the caliber of striker - and the standard of finishing - in the Premiership is much better than that of an average Champioship side.
Interesting to hear Marcus has been the 'weak link' this season. I would assume Coppell doesn't agree with that because Marcus hasn't been one of those to be dropped/lbenched/lose his starting place, while other players have.
An argument could be made that that is solely because Coppell's hands have been tied because he doesn't have any other options. But still, one way or another we've managed to attain 30 points so far with Marcus. Then again, some might say that could/should have been 40 points with another keeper - in which case we'd currently be 2nd in the table

Actim is a rubbish stats based thing, it carries very little weight. The fact that Seol is above many of our other players says all there needs to be about Actim.
It counts things like easy straight at him shots and things like that.
