According to the EP

16/1/2007

Coppell in for Cork defender

Reading are set to raid Cork City once again and land central defender Alan Bennett.

I understand Royals have made an official bid for the 24-year-old, who is considered to be one of the Eircom League’s best defenders.

Former Cork players Kevin Doyle and Shane Long came to Madejski Stadium for less than £100,000 in the summer of 2005.

And the Rebels, who have just returned to pre-season training, are thought to be holding out for around £300,000 for their prized asset, who started his career with amateur side Richmond FC.

Bennett has made more than 100 league appearances for Cork.

He won three Irish Schools Caps, an Ireland Under-21 cap and has won the FAI Youth Cup, four Munster Senior Cup Medals and an Eircom League winners’ medal.

Royals manager Steve Coppell is desperate to add to his squad in the transfer window, although he has ruled out making a move for a striker, despite Kevin Doyle being sidelined for around one month with a hamstring injury.

Peadar
Fat Leather Jacket We do not need a new keeper. Thanks.

Not if you're happy with a keeper who comes off his line, with his arms at chest height and can be outjumped by Andy Johnson.
We've got no keepers for sale, by the way.

He made a mistake, it happens in football.

And again, we need no new keeper.

That's Neale Fenn. He used to be at Spurs. Left us at the end of last season for Bohemians in Dublin.

Perhaps Reading might actually pay a fair transfer fee this time in light of previous thievery

Interesting to look at the supposed amounts - the Cork Echo have it down as €300K (£215K) whereas the EP has it as £300K.

Business is business.

I forgot Doyle put a gun to the Cork board when that release clause was put into his contract.

I'm sure if this deal goes through the hobnob massive will be satisfied with this big money, big name signing, and will be pleased they agreed to pay the huge increase in season ticket prices that have enable us to sign players like this.
