To be fair to the club, all that has been reported is that he is to undergo an exploratory operation; there has been no indication as to WHEN it will be.

It could be tomorrow, it could be in a week.

Royalupnorths's observations as to the process were hugely interesting, but the rant element would need to be put on hold until we discover that the op took place too quickly for the players well being.

Would appear that his cruciate is OK then.

Can I at this point, eat some humble pie? and state that while I disagreed with the op being done so soon, its not so bad if its purely a cartilage injury.

He will be out for approx. 4 weeks if its a medial cartilage (most common), or 6-8 weeks if its a lateral cartilage.

Expect him back for Middlesbrough game, if there are no complications.

Edit.... I've re-read the OS report and it states that the cartilage has been successfully repaired.
Now this is either a error of misunderstanding, as cartilages are rarely repaired, or it may have actually been repaired, but this requires a lengthy rehab of about 3 months.
Its probably better for Sonko if its been repaired but this is rare and has more complications. I expect he has had the cartilage removed which will likely cause him arthritis symptoms when he's 50 but will allow him to rehab faster, and has fewer complications.

I know, I just think they would say he's gonna be back in a month or so, if they didn't think that wasn't the case.

Couldnt a repair mean just a 'trim' of the cartlidge. I thought this was often the way they were handled?

Yeah, your right - removing the damaged bit of cartilage.
I hope that's what they mean.

Michael Owen had his cartilage repaired in the true sense of the world, but that was because he is out for months anyway.

When I had my cartlidge 'trimmed' I was out for about 3 months. However, I didn't have the access to the facilities that Sonks has and he is obviously much fitter than I am generally, so I'd say four to 6 weeks is a fair assumption to make.

That means Middlesbrough or Pompey game. Let's hope there's no complications.

I considered that, but then thought why?
They now know conclusively what is wrong, there is no need to be vague.
If there was other damage, then he will take longer to rehab, then we will all think that Fearn is shite because he takes so long to get players back.
Its best for all concerned to be honest about it.
But, I think they are being vague because its difficult to say for sure how long it will take on the same day as the operation.
I think we will find out more in a week or so.

i don't think the club are going to put a return date on any players at the moment after they initially said Kitson would only be out for 4 weeks with a knee injury.

I think Coppell may have to dig deep to fill the void, especially if cartilage ahs been repaired, doesn't sound good. However, there aren't many opportunities at centre back at the moment, with clubs like Blackburn, Newcastle, West Ham all looking for centre backs, who all have bigger spending power than we do.

Expect to see Bennett come in, and maybe a bid for someone like Curtis Davis, or the bloke from Luton, testing their resolve to keep the player
