Gareth Bale. Over-rated?

by AbovetheI » 23 Jan 2007 19:04

£10mil is the supposed asking price for a young left back who, from what i have seen of him, can only hit a good free kick. Is there any more to this kid?

Of course there is, you don't pay £10m for someone who can only score a free kick. That said I think he has the best ratio of free kicks to goals in Europe.

I haven't read up on why Man Utd want to buy him (supposedly) Do you know why?

Do they release stats for that sort of thing?

He's also a half decent, young left back who has years and years ahead of him.

Half decent is exactly how a few Saints fans I know have described him. "Nothing special but can take a free kick".
But put that young lad in the hands of Alex Ferguson and England may have a new left back in 3 years time.

But, then again, he's 17.

So he's good Championship level at an age when most of his peers are playing in the reserves, or on loan. Not playing anything like as competitive football he is.

He's also not looked too bad in his Wales starts - I'd imagine that's another consideration.

He's looked very good for Wales, a class above anyone except Giggs.

What's going on with Heinze then. Ferguson lost patience with his injury record in the last season or so? I thought he was a much better player than Evra but he did have a good game against Arsenal

Not hard though is it? Giggs is the only decent player they've got (well, apart from Gary Speed maybe).

Is he? I know little about the lad and wont pretend to.
Never the less, put him under Alex Ferguson's coaching and he'll be a star in a few years!

Evra has been playing like that all season, been a better than Vidic IMO. Which says alot. He and Gary Neville almost play as wingers and get forward all game which is a big part of the season why Ronaldo has got so many goals as it allows him to move in the middle alot more.

Heinze is a good defender but is not as quick as Evra and doesn't offer anything going forward. Also a pretty poor passer, Evra fits in the United style beter.

Bale would be back up to Evra, but Ferguson may see Evra as being able to do a job on the left wing in seasons to come. It would give him plenty of options. £10m is a alot of money for a squad player it has to be said. I'm sure Heinze will leave in the summer, he's too good to be a back up player, he will go to someone in Italy or Spain.

Would he not keep Heinze on as centre back cover, I suppose it all depends on if any one comes in with a bid in the close season. You can't rely on Wes Brown for cover.

It will be the biggest disgrace ever if he lets Heinze go and keeps Silvestre.

The difference is Silvestre is prepared to accept being back up, can't see Heinze accepting that.

Spent most of his time at Spurs being mediocre at best, good last couple of months and the man is apparently a sensation
