Wasnt it Brise who constructed the stadium? I do hope its not Multiplex who do the stadium extension. They've got a rep on par with builders with an 07 number with un-distinguishable regional accents who always seem to have tarmac left-over from a previous job to do your lawn.

They've provided architectural and engineering services. On their list for the Allianz Stadium in Munich, The 2008 Beijing Olympic Stadium, City of Manchester Stadium, Coventry Arena and Espanyol

the bbc says only 6 stadiums at the moment meet the world cup criteria - wembley, OT, emirates, st james's, villa park and city of manchester stadium. capacity wise thats 90,000, 76,000, 60,000, 50,000, 48,000 and 48,000.

it would seem that we would need to double our capacity to realistically get a WC game, and AFAIK the stadium can't be expanded beyond 38,000

i read on the beeb that altho stadium of light is 49,000 (?) they probably wouldnt use it as it's too close to St James geographically and they wanted the game's more spread out. which would suit reading quite nicely really.

dunno how they're planning on serving beer to 38,000 people at half time tho.

I think it's not just about the markings, but that you need a certain area around the edges of the pitch too. If they don't have enough space for a FIFA size pitch and the area around it, then it's not big enough.
