Elm Park "Music"

by Man Friday » 13 Mar 2007 12:29

Anybody recall the oveplayed "songs" at Elm Park in the 70's? Seems like "Liquidator" (ska-type song) and David Essex's "Hold Me Close" were played every home match for years and years relentlessly over the tannoy system. Was it some sort of brain-washing? It was as though the back catalogue consisted of only about six songs. Anybody else recall this being the case or indeed recall any other tunes that were played constantly at Elm Park, particularly in the 70's?

I remember about 1.30 every Saturday on the Tilehurst Road end, them playing Whigfield.

That pissed me off.

They used to play Lee Marvin's wandering star, if they lost at home, in the early 70's,
Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline, Song sung Blue, Cracklin' Rosie
I don't remember the name of the tune that was played when they ran out on the pitch,

Lasting memories in late seventies of Status Quo with Rockin' All Over The World and an Abba song. Whenever it was anyone's birthday, the announcer would say they've requested x and would then proceeed to play Status Quo

In 1976/77, probably near the start of the season, they played a self-recorded song by two fans. It sounded like two girls singing, with the "music" provided by twanging an elastic band on a Tupperware box. The bit I can remember was the chorus, which went:

We support a team called Reading
Division 2 is where we're heading

Can't believe that it never caught on.

Mouldy Old Dough by Lieutenant Pigeon was usually played at half time in the mid 70's regardless of the state or quality of the game

Mouldy Old Dough on several occasions throughout the 70s and 80s I seem to vaguely recall.

Mind you the PA system was rather cr*p at Elm Park and had a tendancy to make everything sound like the same tinny echo.
