United duo scoop another double

Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson has won February's Premiership Manager of the Month award, while Ryan Giggs has scooped the Player gong.

It is the second time the United duo have won joint awards this campaign, having both picked up the accolades in August 2006.

The Red Devils won all three of their fixtures last month, scoring eight goals in the process and maintaining their position at the top of the Premiership table.

Giggs started the month strongly, scoring the final goal in a 4-0 away win at Tottenham. He then followed this with another fine display in the 2-0 home success against Charlton, before firing home a left-foot volley in the 2-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

More than a decade has passed since a player and manager from the same club collected an awards 'double' twice in the same season - the last pair being Liverpool duo Roy Evans and Robbie Fowler, who won joint awards in December 1995 and January 1996.

Jim Hytner, from the Barclays Awards Panel, said: "Consistency has been the key to United's success this season, and there's no better illustration of this than the contribution of Ryan Giggs.

"Ferguson and Giggs' leadership helped United turn the game around against Fulham and keep the Red Devils firmly in the hunt for the Barclays Premiership title."

The decision was made by the Barclays Awards Panel, which includes representatives from football's governing bodies, the media and fans.

Nerdy football fans getting together to fix internet polls is, quite literally, one of the saddest aspects of modern day football supporting.

And that is saying something.
