Reading 1994-5 or Reading 2006-7?

by Archie's penalty » 21 Mar 2007 21:16

Was just thinking about the two sides and which one was better - so a player by player analysis seems like the way forward. We have been great over the last couple of years but that 94-5 team took some beating too!

So here goes:-

1) Shaka or Hahnemann - Shaka definitely.
2) Bernal or Murty - Murty just.
3) Kerr or Shorey - Shorey.
4) Wdowczyk or Ingimarsson - tough one but I'd go for Wdowczyk.
5) Adie or Sonko - Dead tie.
6) Osbourne or Sidwell - Sidwell.
7) Taylor or Little - Little - though Scottie was great.
8 ) Gooding or Harper - Gooding.
9) Nogan or Doyle - Doyle.
10) Archie or Lita - Lita.
11) Gilikes or Convey - Gilkes.

So then the present team but looking at each player makes you realise how good we were in 94-5.

What do others reckon?[/b]

LOL - Murty, just

Agree with Gooding, Hislop and Wdowczyk. Most of the others would make up our FA Cup squad at best.

Would be interesting to see the 94 team playing against Premiership opposition.

I think Marcus v Hahnemann is too close to call myself.

Both have weaknesses, and played for us at very different stages of their careers.

Murty is miles better than Bernal was and I think I'd have Darius and Sonks as my centre back pairing.

Ok I take the Murty point but a lot of the others stand up to what we have now I feel.

I was there that day in the Tranmere fans - what a brilliant day! At the time was 15 and remember being really quiet every time we scored as was well afraid some wirral nut would batter me!

That Nogan goal was wonderful!

I personally think that you can't leave out Simon Osbourn, So I would swap him with Geordie so central midfield would be Sidwell and Ossie.....

....Great Video, alot of great memories!! :D

I was thinking that as well. Osborne's long range hits were absolutely stunning. One thing I noticed watching that video was the sheer pace of our counter-attack - all that season we tore people apart on the break. This year it's a bit different (maybe cos it's a higher level of footie).

Thanks for those 3 minutes of video-what a great day that was and one of the best performances of quick-passing football that I have ever seen from a Reading side.

Brilliant video, takes me back a bit and I had that as the best ever away game I'd seen, along with Sheff Utd away '03 before we tore Ipswich apart at Portman Road last season.

To be fair, this comparison is made with a team in the FL1, and a team in the best league in the world that has enabled us to be in contention of European football. In my opinion, the team of today wins with no contest.

Poor Simon Osborn. Renowned as a great player yet few can spell his name correctly!

no question, osborn was class - far, far better than sidwell. osborn's passing was gorgeous, i've not seen anyone else spray a 30 yard ball with the outside of their boot, putting spin on it so that when bounced, it angled into the path of the on-rushing winger - amazing!!!

That and the perfect lobs, best player ever.
