G Force 1871 You don't remember Paul Bodin getting booed when he was introduced to the crowd on his Reading debut then?

I guess the fact that he came from Swindon and that he replaced crowd favourite Dylan Kerr had something to do with it.

This sounds like a sly ironic dig at the Royals' style of play. Perhaps we're not skilfull or cultured enough and base all our success on running.

Just a thought. :)

True.

Because Coppell is a crap manager and didn't even realise. We fans are far more knowledgable and can pick up poor effort but clueless Coppell can't. And even if he could somehow miraculously work out that Seol is doing no good, he has no vocal chords and is therefore totally unable to make it known to him what he was thinking (and he can't write either).

Infact it's said that when he wanted to propose to his (now) wife he somehow had to get the message to the crowd who all chanted the proposal repeatedly until she could make out what they were saying.

So it's a good thing that astute fans like us got the message across to Seol in the only possible way.

Thank God for Boo-ers.

We knew how to ridicule players properly in the early 70's when we finished 14th in Division 4. You modern boo boys are just plastic pretenders.

Booing supporters don't claim to be trying to manage the team.......

Fans boo when they are not happy with the performance of a player. After paying sh*t loads of money to get a ticket they expect to see a hard working performance at the very least from every shirt.

Why are you trying to suggest that fans somehow think they are trying to do Coppells job? Fans boo when they are not happy. All they are saying to Seol when they boo, is that they weren't happy with his performance on that particular day. It doesn't mean fans don't rate Seol or hate him. It just means that on one particular match day, they weren't happy with his performance and booed him to let him know. If he played poorly but it was obvious by his hard running or body language that he was giving 100% then he wouldn't get booed. Booing relates to attitude and not talent. (Although Hughes was booed for lack of talent - which was a shame because his attitude was spot on. A player should never be booed if his attitude is right)

As far as the fans are concerned who booed, they paid alot of money to buy a ticket for the game. Seol is receiving alot of money to play a part in the match. Therefore it is reasonable for fans to expect Seol to give 100% effort during the part of the game that he participated. If he didn't then the fans boo to let him know that.

Next week, Seol could be a fans favourite again.

Nobody booing Seol is trying to claim that Coppell didn't already know that Seol wasn't performing. Coppell is his own man and has his own job to do.

The booing of Seol is a personal message from the customers of the football business that pay alot of money and expect to see a performance that consists of minimum standards. The minimum standard being hard work.

If you spend £2,000 on a laptop from PC World and it doesn't work, then you are gonna complain. Not by booing but by going into the store and asking them to sort it out.

If Barclays sneakingly add additions to your current account and cheat you. As in they sell it to you, you say you don't want it, but they put it on your account anyway. As soon as you notice the extra £14 being paid to them each month you are going to go into that branch and complain to them immediately.

When a player doesn't give 100% on the football pitch that is a form of cheating the fans. He is on a big contract, English Premier League fans are paying the highest costs to watch the best footballers in the world and we don't wanna be cheated by somebody who is only here to earn that huge salary but doesn't wanna give us our side of the bargain. We bought him because we know of his talent. But he has to work hard to make that talent count in a game. If he doesn't then he is cheating us. Because we are paying huge wages through very high ticket costs. We expect to see a return on that investment. We are paying so much so that we can have the best players here at Reading. But those players must work hard. Its as simple as that.

Fortunately Coppell won't tolerate anything less than 100% effort, but it seems many RFC fans are willing to accept no work rate.

Whilst stopping short of booing him, I was hacked off with him against Man Utd in the cup replay. A poor performance from him and then strolled off the pitch when he was substituted and we were back in the game. Didn't run in 75 odd minutes and still couldn't be arsed when he was subbed.

Fair points which I can understand. Obviously many will feel different abotu booing. Eg whenever I've boo'd it's always been AFTER a match is over or AFTER someone's playe their piece - to me that's a big deal. Cheer and support during - boo after to make your point.

I guess there will be no right or wrong. Again for example, I feel very upset - having paid lots of hard earned money to see my town representatives play - when fellow viewers ruin the morale of the players (who I paid good money to see) by booing them.

My post however was in direct response to the bit I quoted (in bold now) from somoeone else - whether or not it was sarcastic. It is a rather fantastical notion that the only thing that got through to Seol was fans booing him. That's the only point I was making. We are paying our hard earned cash not just for the players to perform, but for the manager to do his job. Us booing players willy nilly just because we, in all our wisdom (having been wrong many times before), feel it is the best thing to do does not help the manager who is perfectly capable of sorting things out as we are paying him to do!

Seol was only booed after he was substituted. The fans did let him go about his work on the night and gave him every support and every opportunity.

But after he was substituted and the fans evaluated that there was no effort for the 75 minutes that he was on the pitch a few decided to boo him.

They wanted to inform him that they weren't happy with his performance.

They were never going to be able to approach him and tell him to his face. All a fan can do from a stand to express their dissappointment is boo.

But there are a lot of new supporters at Reading these days who have been brought up in a chemically cleansed environment who think that a little bit of bacteria is the worst thing in the world and will end up killing us all.

Footballers can handle it when the fans let them know they didn't perform. As long as the criticism is fair then players don't have a problem. In Hughes case, I don't think criticism was fair, but for Seol it has been fair because he didn't put in any effort.

Fortunately Seol is man enough and big enough to acknowledge fair criticism and says that he will try harder next time he gets a chance. Fair play to Seol for being strong, fair play to the fans who pay alot of money and don't wanna be cheated, fair play to Coppell for being such a good engineer.

Windymiller An underperforming player is the same as a faulty part in a machine. You simply look towards the engineer to either replace or recondition it. Getting annoyed and demonstrating your anger on that faulty part won't make it work any better. Coppell is a very good engineer, so why boo?

Not the same.

Machine parts don't have human emotions, attitudes or values.

Managing a group of humans and creating a team spirit is not as simple as building a reliable machine and then changing parts when they are broke.

If only building a football team were that simple. But if it was then football wouldn't be the exciting game that it is. You need stars underperforming and underdogs over performing to make the game so great.

We are lucky at Reading for just having one player who doesn't appear to try. Some teams like Man City have 11 players who can't be A*sed.

I think we are in agreement with the above points, which is not surprising given that my original point was quoting someone else who was suggesting (or sarcasticly mocking) that it's our booing which did some good. I don't think it does/did in this situation.

We happen to share the same views abotu booing a truly awful performance AFTER the event but in this case (i.e. with Coppell in charge) my point is it makes no difference really. If something is very obvious to simple fans, you can bet your life that it'd be 100% obvious to one of the best managers in England. And he would (and did it seems) deal with Seol. Whether or not we boo is irrelevant and is down to personal preference. Some like it, some don't. That's fine. There's no right or wrong really as we each pay our money.

I think confusion may lie, however, between booing the likes of Seol who has an infinitely more knowledgable mentor than any of us, and booing for example a manager or a set up with Madejski in charge. Eg when the die hard Southbank started chanting "Taxi for Terry" we NEEDED to make that point to show to JM - someone who by his own admission knows less than we do about football bless him - that things aren't working, we're nto happy and a change is needed. When we did pants day at Parj et al, we NEEDED to do that to show Parj/JM/Howe/ the whole set up that SOMETHING needs to be done... and it was done thanks to us. So booing has its place but it depends who you'e 'talking' to. When you have one of the best managers in England in charge of the team, it really does make it relatively pointless booing a player when we know Coppell would sort the situation out. If it's just to make us feel better because we paid money then so be it.. but in this case it makes no difference. Seol made his confession not because of us this time, but because of Coppell who could see exactly what we saw: from the stands and from teh touchline, and in training, and every day.

In the Paper today: Gerro: Boo-boys are right

http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2002 ... 82,00.html

STEVEN GERRARD says England deserve every bit of stick that has come their way.

The country’s vice-captain heard fans booing in Tel Aviv and is well aware of the vociferous media reaction to our faltering Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

He does not complain. In fact, he all but admitted: “We’re s**t and we know we are.â€

I will argue that it is a different situation. I've nothing against boos ringing out for a team performance as the situtation talked about in the article you posted talks about. It's when it's focused on one particular individual that I'm not a fan.

Being able to cope with being part of a team being criticised is very much different to being the only one criticised.
