Drive from Goring to Streatley & you see "Welcome to West Berkshire". Those Newbury councillors are having a laugh surely.

But on the bright side. H&P are back in business. Or rather someone bought the name from Universal Foods & is now back to baking biccies. Available at Newbury Show I believe. Or is that the West Berks Local Authority Show?

To be honest Royals is a really crap, bland nickname. I've always hated it and never understood why we lost the Biscuitmen soubriquet. Luton isn't full of milliners and they are still called the Hatters. Biscuitmen has much more character and has historical relevance for Reading. The Royals means zilch.

The only good thing about it is our song to Peterborough supporters.

"You're posh, but you're not royal."

Coming from an anti-monarchist, your comments doesn't surprise me.

Behindu Don;t recall the move being too popular and to behonest it made no sense, nicknames aren't supposed to be 'current' and there is nothing wrong with a quirky, archaic name (for example you may be shocked to hear they no longer store guns and ammunition at The Arsenal).

To be pedantic they do store guns and ammunition at AN Arsenal, that's what it means.

They may not store them at Woolwich Arsenal anymore but then Arsenal haven't had any association with Woolwich for decades and when they shifted to Highbury they dropped Woolwich so their name doesn't actually have any connection to geographic location. Therefore, it could be argued that in their case, Arsenal is just a name and is current.

Nice and interesting topic (off-season... ), a good read...

And following the Arsenal sub-thread, are there any other clubs' names that do not show their geographical location? I am thinking UK and maybe Europe here, as PSV springs to mind as the Philips Electrical manufacturer's factory team but that now, of course, has Eindhoven after the PSV.

Possibly Total Network Solutions (T.N.S.) in Welsh Premier.

The is no team in the Welsh Premier League called Total Network Solutions.

You have mistaken them for The New Saints.

(They changed their name at the end of the 2005/06 season).

HTH.

Try Port Vale, who play in Burslem, or Rushden & Diamonds, who play in Irthlingborough (sp?).

If you want to be a Pedant, you can also include Grimsby (who play in Cleethorpes, Scunthorpe (who play in Immingham) and Bolton (who play in Horwich).

Or, you could settle on St Johnston (Perth) or Queen of The South (Dumfries).

Ross County (who play in Dingwall) should also get an honourable mention.

They do indeed. The club was formed when Rushden Town and Irthlingborough Diamonds were merged back in the early 1990s. If they'd kept the Irthlingborough part they'd surely have had the longest name in the UK :)

What about Hibernian, who play in Edinburgh but their name relates to their Irish roots? Heart of Midlothian is vague but their location in Edinburgh is at least accurate.

Mr Angry Or, you could settle on St Johnston (Perth) or Queen of The South (Dumfries).

Although of course St Johnstone is a historic name for Perth.

Juventus is another one - although they are sometimes known as 'Juventus Torino', their official name is Juventus Football Club, with no mention of Turin.

(And this thread must surely move to General Football soon :))

Think I'm right to say that Nottingham Forest is in West Bridgeford.

AFC Wimbledon, play in Kingston (or Milton Keynes  )

Chelsea is in Fulham

West Ham is in East Ham

Crystal Palace is in South Norwood
