Basingstoke Royal
Katie Marsden Only Gary Neville is on the same level in terms of quality and consistancy as Finnan.

Finnan deserves his place as Neville has missed about 4 months of the season.

Gary Neville is shite

You really know your stuff

Hang on, only 3 English players in the prem team of the year and none of them are regulars fro the national side?!

That doesn't say a lot for McLaren does it.

I don't think it's the only evidence against him to be fair!

Some utterly ridiculous selections there !

What is the point of selecting Phil Neville ? Love him or hate him, I can't believe that McLaren doesn't already know all there is to know about him.

Likewise Paul Robinson.

kingthor So, two players not from the big 4 made it: Shorey and Foster.

Foster does not make sense to me. He played in 29 games for the worst team in the Premiership. His average saves per game were 5.8. Hahnemann's are 6.6.

Foster? I don't think I'd have him in my top 5.

He has been excellent though and saved us so many times.

Surley had more than 5 saves per game to make...look at the game last Saturday!

Shorey deserves a chance for England 'B'..been very consistent for you guys.

Surley James should be keeper has had great season and how can you have essien at cm when he has only started 5 games there all season, and hasnt finished any of them. Should be stevie g instead.

Behindu No idea what 'saves per game' means, why do we have so many rubbish and spurious 'statistics' in the game ?

I'd agree that David James would be a candidate for the keeper of the season, but Foster has been excellent behind a clueless defence.

Assuming we can use the old fashioned method of judging players (ie watching them !) rather than think we all like in a computer game i think Foster is a good nomination and nice to see a magazine not doing what the PFA awards did and just handing out votes en bloc to on eteam irrespective of players have actually played...

Well, the reason statistics are useful is because you can't watch every performance of every keeper simulatenously. It is useful to watch games, but if you only watch games, the big four keepers look a lot better than they are. They face significantly less shots than the other teams, so it is pretty easy for them to deny the other team of goals.

Furthermore, if you watch games, flashy looking saves are going to be more impressive than equally impressive saves based more on positioning.

Certainly, watching every match is the best way to do it, but even then, you have to organize what you've seen in some way. Statistics can help with that.

The saves per game stat is silly - it means that a keeper playing behind a good defence will look worse than a keeper behind a bad defence, because the latter will face more shots. Better to have a save percentage - as they do in, for instance, the NHL - so you can see what proportion of shots a keeper saves.

Not that I'm really very much in favour of any of these statistics; what's wrong with subjectivity?!
