cmonurz So Poll has a cheeky joke with a young kid who asks him a question at (presumably) his son's football tournament, and this makes him a tosser?

LOL @ Reading fans.

I suspect most people had already formed their opinion of mr Poll and this incident wouldn't really have altered it.

Lol at cmonurz for taking a cheapshot at Royals fans...

Behindu He called us 'stinky' ???

I'd always thought he was older than 7, but i guess it explains his counting problems.

Just showing you why I wrote what I did. Some of you guys need some perspective - both you and Spacey have picked up directly on Poll's actions at this football tournament in Tring as a stick to beat him with. It was a harmless joke with a little kid.

And you've picked up on a harmless joke and got all hoity toity !

I don't think I've ever really criticised Poll too harshly, as an ex ref i know it's a tough job and he does it better than most.

I'd imagine he sees his 3 card trick for what it was - embarassing but at a distance now quite amusing. If he uses a childish line like 'stinky' to describe a team I don;t see much wrong with chucking a tongue in cheek comment back about it.

Stop being so school marmish and see comments for what they are.

Are you having a go at people on that one as well ?

I don;t think I've read it, I've never been that interested in what 'pundits' predict.

He is widely regarded as the best ref in Europe on the continent.

Likewise Collina, highly regarded as the best ref in the world but was just about the least popular in Italy amongst fans for very similar reasons that Poll is disliked in England.

Personally as a ref I always felt the ego got in the way of his refereeing....However on sunday for someone I percieved as having a big ego he was polite and engaging with my 7 yr old. My boy was being cheeky asking the question and Poll replied in kind. At no point was he strutting around as the big I am which I always thought he would do, he was enjoying a football tournament with friends just like many of us have done.

As a ref I still have the same opinion but as a person he was kind and friendly (although he should not be anything else)

remember this is the close season we will have plenty more daft posts like this until the footy starts again.

I don't blame him for the 3 cards thing... someone was bound to do it sooner or later and it's not just his job to stop that happening, but the assistant referees and 4th official as well.

Bring called irritating by Spacey is likely being coronated, it's quite an honour.

It's like Osama Bin Laden calling someone 'a good terrorist'.
