Wow didn’t Phil Neville exceed at left back tonight  , although to be fair I’m sure McClaren realised it would take Neville time to adapt from being a midfielder into a left back an experiment really worth trying in a friendly match eh.

Well done Leroy last night, you never know McClaren might be watching you one day, probably not he’s a very busy man just got a list from the FA of his forthcoming diary……

England head coach Steve McClaren refused to condemn his side following their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Spain.

McClaren's men went down 1-0 at Old Trafford, as Andres Iniesta's second-half strike won the game for Spain.

England were booed off the pitch by those fans still in the ground and McClaren admits he could not blame them.

"I can understand everybody's reaction - we lost the game and nobody likes to lose a game," he told Sky Sports News.

"But this was an exercise - ( ) it was always going to be a difficult, Spain are a very good side technically and there were certain aspects and performances that pleased me."

McClaren admitted that England's blatant lack of quality played a part in their downfall.

"We lost a football match, we just didn't quite have that final quality around the box that Iniesta had for his goal, we just needed one moment, we created chances and opportunities, but it was disappointing that we didn't score tonight," he continued.

"We are building towards next month, Israel is the key game - I am not making excuses, but we had half a squad missing and big players, and they will come back and make a difference."

What a tit, an exercise ! experiment then don't shuffle the pack and hope.

Quote

"This was meant to be the start of a brave new world for Steve McClaren's England - but it turned out to be the same old story".

"But as for the selection of Phil Neville at left-back, just one word - why?"

"This was the perfect opportunity to give Gareth Barry a proper go on the left - or even blood the likes of Leighton Baines or Nicky Shorey".

Says it all

In the Times today... apparently Coppell believes that 'Shorey should have been drafted into the England squad for the friendly against Spain last week. Surely he deserved a call-up, just to get a look at him in training' Coppell said.

First time I've heard Coppell speak out like that. Wonder if he actually tried to ring Mclaren and ask him to visit and see the lads. He might turn up at the Middlesborough game (to look at Woodgate and Downing of course).

All McClaren will ever do is select the usual names from the standard "big" clubs plus Middlesbrough for some reason...

Interesting quotes in the Independent this morning, too - same stuff I expect as was in The Times:
The Independent Reading's growing sucess was reflected when 14 of their players were on international duty last week but Steve Coppell, the manager, things that more of his team shoeld be winning recognition for their countries. He was particularly surprised that Nicky Shorey, his left back, was not in England's squad to face Spain last Wednesday.
Coppell said "When I look at what happened in midweek, I thought , "Well surely Nicky Shorey deserved a call-up just to get a taste of it, just so they can see him training, even if he then doesn't play."
Having been promoted last season, Readin are sixth in the Premiershup and have won seven and drawn one of eight matches since the new year. Their manager believes that the club's inexperience in the top flight may be counting against more of his players gaining international experience.
"Because we are new, nobody knows of our longevity," Coppell said. "Nobody knows whether we're capable of sustaining our run. All the players can do is keep knocking on the door."
"Don't get me wrong, I don't want any of my players to be away for a week at a time. All managers are like that. I', like a jealous lover with them. I don't want anyone else to see them. I want them all to be the best kept secrets in football. But I realise that football doesn't work that way and, for their own individual ambitions, international football as got to be an option."
The physical demands on players who represent their countries were reflected in the journey that Stephen Hunt had to make after playing for the Republic of Ireland away to San Marino.
Hunt, who played against Aston Villa in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off, got back to Dublin from Rimini at 3.30am on Thursday, caught a flight to Heathrow and reported for training with Reading at 9.30am.
"That's why it's very important for the players to look after themselves", Coppell said. "The more games, the more chances of injuries and fatigue".

well it is obvious that wayne bridge will be put in infront of shorey as he as at a bigger club. mcclaren needs to come to one of our home games to watch shorey to see what he's like, another player though highly rated is gareth bale of southampton and he probably has more chance as he is part of the under 21 set up. gareth barry can play at left back as well can't he??

ENGLAND

PAUL ROBINSON: Flapped at an early free-kick, but the Tottenham keeper redeemed himself with a reaction save from Ronaldinho at the start of the second half. Little chance with the goal in stoppage time. - 7/10.

JAMIE CARRAGHER: Was given the runaround by Robinho during the first half, but settled well. - 6.

LEDLEY KING: Spurs man was quick to weigh in with some strong and important challenges but maybe switched off for the Brazil equaliser - 6.

JOHN TERRY: Captain arrived in the right place at the right time to head England in front. Another solid display from the Chelsea skipper - 7.

NICKY SHOREY: Did not disappoint on his big night. Solid showing from the Reading full-back - 7.

JOE COLE: Was one of England's more adventurous players, but failed to find either a decisive pass or strike on goal - 7.

FRANK LAMPARD: Another below-par showing from the Chelsea man, who has set himself such high standards. - 5.

STEVEN GERRARD: Had more defensive duties than the Liverpool skipper would have liked, producing some crucial tackles. - 7.

DAVID BECKHAM: The former England captain produced a quality display on his return to international action. At the centre of everything positive and just off target with free-kick in first half - 8.

ALAN SMITH: Disappointing showing from the Manchester United striker. Rarely threatened - 5.

MICHAEL OWEN: Showed a few glimpses of his old self. Made some telling runs and flicked a header over in the second half - 6.

SUBSTITUTES

STEWART DOWNING (for Cole, 62): The Middlesbrough man forced a fine one-handed save from Helton. Looked lively from then on - 7.

KIERON DYER (for Smith, 62): Made little impact, but covered plenty of ground - 6.

WES BROWN (for Terry, 73): Almost a nightmare introduction for the Manchester United defender, but fortunately his mistake on the edge of the area was not punished - 5.

JERMAINE JENAS (for Beckham, 77): Tottenham midfielder was full of running, but no real chance to make an impression - 6.

PETER CROUCH (for Owen, 83): Little opportunity for the giant Liverpool striker to have an impact - 6.

MICHAEL CARRICK (for Lampard, 88) Few chances to show what he could do - 6.

BRAZIL

HELTON: Little for the Brazil keeper to worry about. Dealt with what did come his way comfortably - 6.

DANIEL ALVES: Sevilla full-back was not really tested, and went forwards when needed - 6.

NALDO: Caught out for the England goal, but had otherwise kept the home attack relatively quiet from open play - 6.

JUAN: Bayer Leverkusen defender produced a solid display, if rarely troubled around the area - 6.

GILBERTO: Helped keep the defensive line and did not get dragged up field too often in support of attack - 6.

MINEIRO: Played just in front of the back four and fed the counter attacks well - 6.

RONALDINHO: Barcelona man was as expected the main attacking outlet for Brazil. Showed some brilliant footwork, but was off radar with his free-kicks tonight - 8.

GILBERTO SILVA: Arsenal man produced another consistent display as holding midfielder. Had the ball in the net in first half, but was ruled out for offside. Cross set-up the stoppage time equaliser - 7.

VAGNER LOVE: Few clear chances for the CSKA Moscow striker. Was good in his link-up play - 6.

KAKA: AC Milan star showed plenty of neat footwork and fired a couple of shots off target. - 7.

ROBINHO: Real Madrid attacker was full of running, and produced decent opening for himself in the first half. - 6.

SUBSTITUTES

EDMILSON (for Miniero, 63): Solid showing. Like for like replacement - 6.

MAICON (for Alves, 65): Slotted into the side and got forwards well - 6.

ALFONSO (for Kaka, 71): Best chances of the night fell to the Heerenveen striker on his debut. Will feel he could have done better - 6.

DIEGO (for Robinho, 74): Got forwards well, and the Werder Bremen man popped up in stoppage time to head home an equaliser - 7.

Rated as good as Kaka
