bassavage Speaking of Shaun Allaway, what happened to him? I thought he was the next big star and since he moved to Leeds I've not heard about him since.
There was a broadsheet newspaper article about him fairly recently. I don't recall much of what it said but I don't think he ever got past 4th choice keeper at Leeds before drifting away, possibly into non-league.
Found it, it was in 2004 so not sure what's happened since then -
[b]Frustrated Allaway given chance in shop window
Our correspondent speaks to Slough's unfulfilled goalkeeper
By Russell Kempson
FIVE years ago, Shaun Allaway had the world at his feet. Or, more precisely, in his hands. He was one of the most highly rated young goalkeepers in the country and played for the England Under-17 side against Argentina at Wembley Stadium. Among his team-mates were Jermaine Pennant and Jermaine Jenas; one of his opponents was Carlos Tevez.
Pennant now hovers on the fringes for Arsenal, Jenas is a regular with Newcastle United and Tevez, the Boca Juniors striker, helped his country to win the Olympic gold medal this year. Today, Allaway will play for Slough Town, the Ryman League premier division side, against Yeading in the FA Cup second round.
Remarkably, it is only Allaway’s fourth senior appearance since that game at Wembley in 1999. All have been with Slough, the first in their 2-1 victory against Walsall, the Coca-Cola League One club, in the first round of the Cup last month. A series of fine saves, highlighted on Match of the Day, brought satisfaction at the end of years of frustration.
“Yep, that was my first-ever competitive game,â€
