Hammond on Salaries

by Uke » 14 Jun 2007 14:53

In today's Grauniad

http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,2102411,00.html

"There's a little bit of fear out there at the moment," Nicky Hammond, Reading's director of football, said yesterday. "Everyone seems to be keeping their powder dry. The numbers being talked about this season are well in excess of last year in terms of both wages and transfers."

Fantastic quote about Gary Kelly @ Leeds from Ken Bates!

salaries were coming down to a responsible level till Abramovich arrived. market totally distorted, clubs going bust and into administration, all the for the benefit of a crook from a cold, shit place.

I'd add to that that things were just starting to show signs of maybe returning to normality with Chelsea being an anomaly when Eggy and a couple of others show up and push the extremes still further.

I'd whole heartedly support a stance from us of not playing along and if it gets us relegated so be it. At least we won't have the possibility of going bust in 4 years if it all blows up.

The only way it'll be stopped is if clubs like ours keep it sane and have some success. A tall order, but something to remember when we feel like we're getting left behind in the transfer race.

Indeed, I'd much rather failure than sell out to the corrupt boom and bust world.

I would rather support us in League 2 than see wages spiral with commensurate rises in prices.

Eggy will be suprised when his return on Investment is not good, then what?

Same for Manure, Liverpool, Chelsea, and the rest

Its as if LUFC never happened to them

I cant see it really affecting Utd much. THey can afford to spend a bucket load, and rarely seem to go crazy on anything other than the odd transfer.

Agreed. Average WHU players + stupid money + long contracts = no drive and no hunger

Won't be a problem for Man U - they are a global brand and could survive on that alone. The rest, however, are a different story...

West Ham seem to be prepared to splash the cash, but their fate is still not sealed, I would p*ss myself if they get Bent as well as Parker then get relegated for the Tevez sh*t and no one can afford their players due to their silly wages, sensible wages and mid table (well 17th or higher) would suit me fine. Long may sensible people reign our club.

I would rather be standing in the driving rain watching us playing West Croydon in a scrappy non league dogfight in a manky south london park than see the club pay any player more than 20k a week in the prem ...

I'd rather watch a bunch of spotty kids kick a beach ball around a parking lot than watch a single minute of any game in which professional footballers play.
