The Argentinian league system is weird. Twenty teams play in two league campaigns over the period of a calendar year: the Clausura from February to June and the Apertura from August December. Each team only faces the other once in each, so 19 games and the season is over. Relegation is a complex affair; two teams with the worst average record over the previous three years. Similar leagues also operate in Uruguay and Mexico.

I watch a fair bit of both tournaments as they show a lot on FSC in the US. It is impressive stuff and their are some o*ford-hot teams: Boca of course, but also Independiente, Estudiantes, San Lorenzo, Newell's Old Boys, Velez Sarfield and River Plate. It is competitive as well; no two teams dominate like ManUre and Chelski.

Personally, I think we could get hammered, but who knows. Argentinian teams have always been a bit nasty, but a bit tasty as well. Nine World Club Champions from Argentina as opposed to England's one!

And not just that, Argentinean teams win their continental championship quite often and therefore qualify for the World Club Championship a lot.

According to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copa_Toyota_Libertadores , Argentinean teams have won it 21 times! Compared to English clubs winning the European Cup 10 times.

Spacey, without wanting to sound patronising, ask yourself how many leagues there are in S. America and how many of these are likely to provide genuine contenders for the Copa Libertadores?

Six nations out of ten have provided winners of the Copa Libertadores. In Europe, it is ten out of... who knows how many?

Currently 53, but that includes a few countries that may or may not even have leagues.

Of those 6 nations in the Copa Lib, something like 75% of titles have gone to Brazil or Argentina.

What an ignorant comment. Like you know anything about the standard of their league. They consistently produce world class player's and pay them very little over there, eventually they move to Europe for money.
England however are supposedly the best league in the world and only had two teams in the last 10 years to win the champions league, not to mention our national team only winning one trophy in existence. Thats piss poor. Far more respect for the Argentinian league than the rabble of a set up over here. Its all about money, TV deals, men in suits and dodgy deals with agents. We disrespect every small club because it doesn't being the big boys money, thats all the clubs are in the prem for these days. Its just a big business.

The English leagues are an absolute joke and I for one hope they inflate so much they pop. We have to start from day one to build it back to something respectable.

The top Argentinian and Brazilian teams took the old Intercontinental cup seriously as it was the only way they could prove to the rest of the world that their leagues were the equals of the European ones, given that the very Euro-centric media would tend to suggest that their leagues were 'no-mark' ones.

Ignorant? Or actually correct?

They are hyped up for the one off game yes. But whose suggesting their league is no-mark? if thats not your opinion and you believed the media quoted that, then state that in your post.

Absolutely spot on. Certainly the Argentinian league produces top-notch quality players that produce the goods outside of their own country. European clubs fall over themselves to sign them up.
