Top Scorer 2007/2008

by Katie Marsden » 03 Aug 2007 14:39

Rooney for me. He's had a full pre season behind him and is playing in a side that's built on attacking football and creates dozens of chances per game.

He got 23 goals last season and he was well off his best for a lot of the season. I think this will be the season he hits top form and establishes himself as the worlds number one striker.

I will award points for each goal scored.

2 points for a goal in the Champions League proper

1.5 points for a goal in the Premiership

1 point for a goal in the FA Cup

0.5 points for a goal in the League Cup

Eduardo da Silva has a great record in front of goal, granted it was in the Croatian League but has all the attributes.

A bit of an unfair points system if you're not in Champions League surely.

How about, on top of that, comparing like with like and just counting Premiership goals, giving it an even playing field?

UEFA cup goals?

Also biased towards teams with an easier group (i.e. probably not Arsenal or Liverpool - no surprise there then).

What Katie obviously meant to say was "I'll weight this as much in favour of Man U players as I can".

Why not 1.5?

Seems a more exclusive tournament and one that even quite top English clubs find quite difficult.

United have been poor in Europe for a number of years, so not sure how I'm meant to be favouring them by making goals in said competition worth more than in the league.

I suggest you think before you post.

I reckon we should award 100 points for every goal scored in the Championship in the past.

(yes, I'm aware that Darren Bent possibly could top it, but at least Leroy Lita would be 2nd.)

Enjoyed your lunchtime shandy i take it.

Even if they get knocked out at the group stage ( which they didn't last season ) it still gives them 6 more opportunities to score than players for teams that arent in Europe have.

Berbatov almost scored as many UEFA Cup goals as he did Premiership ones last season.

This would suggest the standard of the UEFA Cup is very poor untill you reach the last eight.

Particularly poor in reaching the semis last season.

The only goals which matter in a top goalscorer contest are league goals; on that basis I've gone for the boy Owen.

Slightly unfair on the players who aren't involved in Europe but that's just unfortunate.

It evens itself out when you consider the top players don't play in league cup games and get rested for other games.

By almost as many, you mean "about half as many"?

Point taken, but it just seems low to me.

I'm going to be laughing when Lita scores 30 in the FA Cup.

7 goals in 8 UEFA Cup games.

12 goals in 33 Premiership games.

Top players for most teams that aren't in Europe don't play in the League cup either. Also double the points for a goal in Champs League V half the points a goal in League Cup is hardly evening it out.
